Then your truck will be an ‘03, based on the VIN stamped into the RH frame rail. The process varies from one jurisdiction to another. I’ve done a few, both places I did them I just had to go to DMV with the truck to have the VIN sighted. Same as importing one, or registering a glider kit.

 

Passenger vehicles are under different regs and their marked differently. Commercial vehicles the only number that means anything is the chassis number, the one stamped in the frame rail. Vehicle identity for ownership, registration and extra-jurisdictional road and fuel tax all relate to the the number on the frame.

 

Number on the cab means nothing, the registration will have the chassis number on it, and if enforcement even notices the number on the cab is different, they’ll go right to the frame rail to verify that’s the number on the registration.

 

I’d be surprised if a officer would even know where to find a VIN on a frame. I can assure you they will notice if the door jamb differs from the registration.

 

Assuming you have a frame rail with all the drillings in the right place. If only it were as simple as that. That said, I’ve seen stolen trucks that were recovered disguised with a section of frame from a wreck grafted on to the front. D.O.T commercial vehicle theft guy be all over that frame splice in seconds if they’re looking for it. Check with the jurisdiction you’re planning to licence it and see what they say. The truck can only have one identity, that’s the chassis number, that’s the only number that means anything. Everything else can be unscrewed and changed.
