I used to drive a setup like that. For awhile I would start my week in a truck with a standard 10 and mid week jump to a truck with a super 10 in it. Totally different shift patterns. Muscle memory takes over and you you just shift without thinking about it.
There was a few drivers that couldn't drive the super 10s. Guess they couldn't get that different pattern in their heads.

Which almost never had the shift pattern in them anywhere! It was just a matter of one trip up through the gears to see which pattern it was...

This would be my guess. That high-low would almost have to be a range shift or you'd have all kinds of gear duplications.

SL3406, Oxbow and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

Yes, of the 2 options I lean towards this shift pattern. A total of 40 forward gears, and 8 reverse gears, gives a person many options lol. Could you imagine this truck being in a driving school….?:)

    Hammer166 and Oxbow Thank this.

I’ve seen guys that had no problem with a 9 / 10 / 13 / 15 speed transmission, but you throw them in a medium duty truck with a 5 speed transmission & 2 speed differential, they were lost with all the split shifting when heavy. A friends dad was a good example of this.

And the shift pattern between medium duty trucks can be a challenge. The shift pattern between 4th & 5th can be confusing for some. The old GMC I learned to drive long ago as a teenager had a vacuum operated 2 speed differential, it was a learning curve as a young man…..

That split shifting when the 2speed knob was in the dash and not on the stick (49 Ford) was interesting t learn.

Let's see, if memory serves you went from 4th direct to 5th direct to 4th over and then 5th over. Is that right?

    OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this.

We have one truck with a 15 against the dash, and two 18s.

The 15 is the smoothest shifting, but going back and forth from one to the other will catch me every time when I am not thinking and muscle memory takes over.

    Hammer166 Thanks this.
