I always liked doing it that way too. Put my binders on each side, that way you're tightening in both directions. Unless I'm using straps with all the winches on one side, but if I have to throw a ratchet strap I'll usually put the ratchet on the other side just out of habit. When I was a LOT younger, I'd climb right on the load and place my ratchet binders pulling everything towards the center...but I'm way too old for that now...

Whenever I chained bridge iron, we weren't allowed to put chain marks on the edges. I usually just used pieces of plain angle iron maybe 4" long. Maybe 3X4" legs, put the longer leg on top so it (might) help it to keep from falling off when tightening. If the iron was painted, I could just put a piece of cardboard under the angle.

My son lives down on 17th St so we go in there occasionally for leisure time. I spent a TON of time hanging around 50th St. Sometimes wandering around for half the day while waiting to be unloaded. I actually spent a WHOLE DAY sitting there on a Saturday waiting for them to assemble the crane. They had a whole block of 50th shut down for the operation. I had someone ask me if it was some kind of movie production going on(?!?) When the project first started, I was going in there at night. I'd come up Madison, park and wait for them to bring me around the corner onto 50th. When I started going there in the daytime, I parked on Madison in the same spot and went to find someone on site. When I got back to the truck, there was a ticket on it...I didn't realize I was in a bus stop...Apparently, that was acceptable at night but not during the day...Never paid the fine... I used to order quite a few NYC oversize permits and I was always waiting for them to reject one for "unpaid violations"... Never happened, I used to have the "souvenir" but I think I finally chucked it...
