How do RGN trailers work?

    I’ve long been intrigued by RGN trailers but just don’t know anything about them. That is a whole another field of trucking that I have nothing to do with.

    I have began acquiring some farm/construction equipment and it’s pretty annoying that I own a trucking company but am having to wait 2 weeks to have a new tractor delivered. The dealership is only 30 miles away.

    Long story short I wouldn’t mind just having my own trailer to transport things like tractors, Bull dozers, skid steers, excavators, front end loaders, anything I want.

    I don’t know, what I don’t know so to speak. Can my standard Kenworth T680 OTR tractor pull one of these? Do I need special air bag controls for a RGN? How much weight could I haul on this trailer before it’s too much for my truck?

    How does this whole process work with unhooking, loading, rehooking, etc? What strength chains would I need? Im border line just pissed off enough to force myself to learn this stuff to service my own wants and desires. Maybe down the road I’d really enjoy it and could use my new found knowledge to help my business.

    To add: The tractor is a JD 5115m with a 15 foot batwing bush hog. If I had a dozer it would likely be a D4 or at most a D5. Skid steers obviously small, excavator I have no idea. I’m sure this whole idea is overkill but curious and like I said could maybe haul other things as well.

    A tandem axle 35 ton trailer would do well for you. Also available with longer wells for the same trailer length. For reference my rgn is a trail king 55/70 ton with 3 axle it’s 53 foot but only has a 26 foot well which fills up fast.
    Make sure to get a non ground bearing hydraulic type if you want to separate it anywhere other than a parking lot
    Ground bearings ones tend to burry the lift cylinder in soft ground instead of lifting the trailer (speaking from experience)
    You will need a wet kit or a trailer with its own hydraulics
    I would go with the wet kit more versatile and much more trouble free and can run other trailers.
    You could probably also use a step deck with ramps but I don’t think I would drive an excavator on that, they can get pretty sketchy on a rgn and when not if you eventually slide off you will probably only need new undies.
    As far as your truck for what you described wanting to do it should be fine.
    I like short chains i carry about a dozen 2-5 foot chains 1/2 and 3/8 g70 and 3-4 16 foot 3/8 chains. Not that it can’t be done with less but I would use grade 70 or better. Separating will take some practice but it’s easy once you do it a few times
    With my setup you lift the neck enough to get the stops out and then let it down, unhook the air and lights pull the lock pin and then put the prop down until it starts to lift the neck off the trailer and simply pull away ( make sure you remember to unhook the air lines and cord)

    For that size equipment just get a step deck

    To answer some questions.. they will deliver it but could be up to two weeks because they are so behind.

    Yes, I may just drive it as well if I get an update Monday and it’s not a good one!

    Lester, with a step deck you need a dock to unload right? Can’t just work straight out of the field?

    I know this is all overkill but still good to think about and if I do have several pieces of equipment I may consider renting them out or who knows maybe even doing jobs. In the back of my mind I’m also thinking it could help my Dad out who has a couple big pieces but no way to really move them from farm to farm when it comes to track machines.

    Lastly, I’m tired of buying trucks, vans, and freaking reefers all the #### time. LOL Need a breath of fresh air. ;)

    Obviously u bought more machine than I did but my dealer delivered mine 30 miles away ,waxed and full of fuel .

    So far about all I’ve gotten other then the bill is some tire shine. lol. It was empty on fuel when I went yesterday to inspect and pay for it. Oh, I was graced with two free John Deere hats though! haha.
