Looking at moving on from my current job, As I was duped in believing after 3 years id be making 27 an hour… come to find out, yeah after 3 years i’ll make 27..on my 8th year.. so im at 16 an hour right now and can’t live like this anymore.anyway there is a position open at Old Dominion about an hour drive from me. It’s for a combo linehauler/dock worker position in erie P.A. So I have some questions.
    - how long will I be a slave to the docks and what’s the pay while on dock vs linehauling?
    - is it set hours or is it different hours everyweek?
    - ot after 40 hours?
    - is dockwork loading with forklifts or by hand?
More questions to come i’m sure. Any answers would be quite helpful.

I'm sorry to hear you can't make it on $16 an hour, after 3 years, you should be in the $20 range, heck Walmart is paying $21.50 for overnight stock crew. I believe "Over Dose" is non-union company, and I think is all by the hour. There may be a different rate for dock and driving, but linehaul is incredibly boring, and dock work is a welcome change of pace. Linehaul/ dock work aside from a dump truck, is about the most "normal" hours you'll find in trucking,, they just may be from 7pm to 5am, but it's way better than an OTR gig. There may be some hand work, but 90% is forklift. I actually enjoyed that job. OD , I heard, is a great company, been around a while, and I'll tell you, if they ever loosen the regs, to get drivers that smoked a joint 2 months ago back in, it's these jobs that will fill up 1st. I wouldn't dawdle. Good luck.

Good luck with the 2 hour round trip commute to work. I did that for 3 months, nearly working 14 hours everyday, couldn't take it anymore.

Sadly, long commutes are a normal thing. As businesses close left and right, people need to travel farther, and with the cars today, it's not like you are driving a Ford Falcon. I had a newer Mustang and it, for me, was kind of relaxing before I got home to whatever THAT entailed. The biggest problem I see is the cost of gas, and maybe, a good company like OD would help with that. An hour one way was about the limit.

How long is your current commute? More than likely the OD job is worth jumping on.

They might be looking to fill a bid run that nobody wants. I believe OD does rebids every 6 months so that gives drivers the opportunity for a change if they want one. The hours should stay constant.

OT after 40 will depend on the law in PA. We don’t get it here in MD.

The vast majority of what you’d be handling on that dock job would be palletized freight at a hub terminal with a forklift, with the occasional rare hand bomb garbage. A load comes in, has to be unloaded, and RE-loaded on a trailer going a different direction with other shipments going that way.

    Good luck.

I will be at 21 in 3 years, however it’s ALOT of manual labor where im at and it’s hard to justify waiting that long for the raise. Not to mention the crew I work with sees me as a rented mule and works me like one. I spend most of my days with a shovel or jackhammer and it’s just not worth it.

I dont have much of a choice. I live right smack dab in between to major cities, both equally an hour away from me.

My current commute is a half hour one way. The hour commute to old do is what google maps says. However thats also going speed limit, and on on our highway everyone goes 10-15 mph over that.. likely it would be closer to 45 mins

Does anyone know if they hire with an out of state licence?

That sounds to me like a line-haul job where you might have to switch your own freight at a cross-dock somewhere on one end. P+D and Regional guys do that #### all the time. A little odd but not unheard of for a line-haul. They may have a “terminal” some where that’s actually a shared facility with no staff.

Being a combo driver means I have no seniority as far as linehauling goes correct? Combo is a seperate class to linehaul, or p&d from what I hear.

I'd jump to Old Dominion. Wouldn't even hesitate.
@blairandgretchen worked there for a few years.

No idea about seniority and all the Twilight Zone foolishness at those big freight outfits. I was just pitching a scenario that might fit the job description. Who knows with those guys. Their goal could be trying to cut OT off the dock and cover a 1 or 2 times a week scheduled truck with the same body. No way to know without talking to them.
