Is the wheel size what makes the difference? 22” vs 24”?

It CAN, but thats rarely the deciding factor, for reference tall 24s to lp 22s is only a difference of 1.89 inches (3.78/2)

But on my reitenour atm lp 22s wont do the trick, can barely get my winch slid over to behind the tire when loaded, and air bags dumped even empty its a no-go, but on the transcraft eagle 2 we had tall 24s and i could put a winch directly over the tire with 2 inch of clearance loaded and bags filled if i remember right (never did that because i didnt want to risk a pothole and airbag collapsing turning into eating a tire when fully loaded) at 3 inch clearance with bags dropped i think itd be fine

I’m not sure. As you can see there’s plenty of room for winches over these tires. This trailer has low pro 22.5’s. E090C7C4-7559-47D6-A9AD-67A69EFCE38A.jpeg

My trailer has 22.5, and dumped loaded the trailer is almost touching the rear tire. The front bags can't hold the weight on their own. My trailer gauge will go all the way to 120 psi trying to level.

The way you order your trailer has alot to do with it, because of deck heights. The bags on this new trailer are like half the height of any other I've had. Also your 5th wheel height. Unfortunately, my new fifth wheel is about 1.5 inches lower than the old one. I was in desperate need and that's what they had in stock.

I destroyed a tire in idaho one time because of a winch over the tire.. Hit a big ### pothole, missed it with my truck but nailed it with the trailer. I seen the tread go flying in the mirror. Luckily it didnt blow out, just sheared the tread off like a hot knife thru butter.

I had the same thing happen. We had so many different brand trailers at the crane company where I worked. Some would take a winch over a tire some wouldn’t. I found out the hard way that one wouldn’t heading to a job in downtown Washington D.C. I completely melted a groove in a tire and burnt up the strap. It didn’t blow out but it was ruined. I always loved the look on my boss’s face when he uttered the famous words around the yard “there you go F’n up my S### again “!

It is amazing to me that a O/O would not buy a half dozen low profile winches for each side and mount them at the back to give you more clearance at the tires. Unless you plan on storing your straps on the winches(dumb IMO) then the low profile winches are just better both front and back. An off camber corner pulling into a customer's yard can eat a tractor fender with a tall winch in the wrong spot, (Experience speaking).

That’s what pocket winches and ratchet straps are for.
