I like and agree with all of that, except for the being available 24/7. If they’re with me on the truck, that’s one thing, but if they’re no longer with me, I need to be reasonable too. My getting adequate rest matters for safe operation of the CMV.

I’m sure negative reinforcement or punishment is an effective way to teach, but I would think that it would instill fear, and mistrust in the mentee. It wouldn’t be my way of doing things. Kind of makes me think of people who use shock collars to train dogs. I would never support such methods.

I haven’t read all the thread but I’ll just say at 3 yrs it’s commendable but your just now finding your footing.

My question… do you know how to throw chains? If not… keep learning yourself and revisit this idea.

I was mentored by my Dad and if he missed one shift in 2000 miles he would cuss up a storm for atleast 5 mins. The expectation was extremely HIGH. There was no room for error.

I only speak English, so I would not be capable of teaching someone who didn’t have a solid understanding of that language at this juncture.

Agreed on all of that. I touched on these things in a previous post, but I feel a good teacher is first and foremost patient, gentle in spirit, encouraging and kind. Yelling and belittling a student only creates fear and agitates negative possibilities.

I personally feel that it is presumptive, foolish, and down-right mean for female students to assume that male mentors have ill intentions, are unsafe, or are unprofessional. This is a male dominated industry. If a woman can not deal with a man in a professional context, it makes me question whether she can handle working in this industry. Yes there are exceptions to the rule, but the vast majority of male mentors out there, aren’t there because they want to rape women. Female students demanding female mentors sure does give the impression that they think the worst of them, and I find that mentality offensive. I would prefer male students, because I do not want to enable or support that sort of attitude.

Do I know how? Yes. Will I drive if the weather is bad enough to require chains assuming I can get to some place safe to park before they become needed? Absolutely not! I’m not trying to be super trucker. I’m trying to be safe out there and make it home safe.

Well hey shout out to you. It just seems like a lot of starter companies just avoid snow or only carry chains to be legal. If you can chain up vs calling dispatch and saying I’m stuck then your far ahead.

To me what separates the boys from men or girls from women is the ability to take care of yourself and get the job done. Nowadays, it’s easy to sit in the seat and drive, but difficult to take control of the situation and get the job done.

You gotta remember, in the old days there was no power steering, air conditioning, or all that much heat. Having that mindset of a brotherhood saved lives. I understand it’s not the old days but let’s still try and train for it because Mother Nature knows no gender or experience.

I have the old lanterns that you would hang on the rear of your trailer as a tail light. Each time you stopped you’d have to relight it so people could see you. We’re far from that but it would be nice if we still trained for it.

Many females will go with a male trainer but companies have been sued for incidents in the past and make it policy not to mix the sexes .. Myself I think a GOOD trainer would have the right morals to make it a enjoyable adventure for both parties. I kept in touch with the trainer I had 27 years ago for about 10 years until he retired and the rare time I saw him I bought a coffee or a meal for him .
