Okay here goes, sorry in advance if this gets a little long...

My Background. I am a former Navy Nuclear Engineer, who gave that up 30 years ago follow a totally different career path of being a Math, P.E. and physical education, teacher and high school football coach for the past 27 years. I am currently 57 years old and am eligible to retire as a teacher (in CA) for about $3.8month. If i wait till 60 my retirement will be about $5.1k per month. The way i am calculating is that if i live to be 85 years old, I am sacrificing $436,000. My goal is to make this difference up via trucking in 5 years. Or $87.6K per year. Then go off to the carribean and live off my $3.8K like a king with a scuba tank attached to my back till i die. I already have the place in mind and im keeping it a secret so the prices dont go up lol.
.
I am soooo over teaching. Especially in the Lib-tard state of California. I have been researching the trucking industry since January. I have turned of ESPN and sports radio, And have given all my attention to the transportation industry CDL, and You Tube Videos and am excited about my new career path. And regaining my sanity from teaching. Thanks to Tow Piglet, DD214 Transport, Driven Trucking, HotShot Bennii, and more for all your informative content.
Originally i was thinking CDL and drive OTR, see the country progress to owner operator. But understand that new trucking salary is $40-50K to get "experience"
Then i looked into RV/auto transport, but only experience makes insurance doable.
Then began to research Hot Shot, primarily for lower equipment costs, ability get "as much as im willing to work for". Book my own loads, go where i want. and plan to get my CDL. Still trying to decide betwen CDL and Non CDL Hotshot.
I am still a little leary of things i see or what dispatchers say guaranteed dedicated rate of $3k per week from Florida to Vegas (net not gross) for new drivers but im considering that as my learing option.
I am about to start my LLC in NV. I am looking to relocate outside Ca. to some southern area state, not sure of which one. Texas and NV, and Fl, leading for the tax reasons. Figure i will drive a few months and make my decision.
I have equity in my home to purchase equipment, but also looking to possibly get startup loan to get going, has anybody had luck with a company helping startup trucking company with no experience? I doubt it also.
Trying to decide from retiring this June, or at next semester in December at the latest! Looking to get my CDL this summer.
Can anyone tell me about getting my authority, now, and letting it age until im ready to roll. I am thinking i could do a cpl of loads a month of Non CDL Hotshot to pay for truck and insurance until June.
Also would like to hear people from Ca. with fuel prices and all if it is feasable for the short term.
Looking forward to your thoughts, feedback, advice. Just dont tell me "Stay teaching" AKA "Wrong Answer"

My best advice is to stay until you are 60, and lock in that better retirement. The trucking aspect will still be there!

Do what you want to do life is short.
Is moving to trucking a good move financially and health wise. No. But what does that matter if it’s what you really want to do. So think about it real hard before you throw away what you have.MOBee, CoachGKJ and bumper Jack Thank this. -
Stay until you're 60 may not be worth it if it impairs your mental health.
Procrastination can destroy a person.
New trucking pay of $40 - $50 is way off. It was that way decades ago, but not today. Think more like $65 - $70 the first year, if you have all endorsements. -
Simple answer is no. Trucking is starting to slow down, rates are sliding and there is a glut of new entrants already. 3 years from now it will be a different story and you will be better off financially.
blairandgretchen, nredfor88 and CoachGKJ Thank this. -
One other thing to think about. Trucking is a full time job. I’m not talking about full time in the sense of the typical persons understanding. I mean full time. You drive, sleep, and drive again. It will become your life.

Just KNOW The 1st YEAR Will Be The Worst Year, Maybe Like Teaching.
In Latter Elementary and all Middle and High School Years, I found "some Teachers" liked Dishing Out and Receiving Sarcasm As Well Some Did Not. There Are ENDLESS Amounts Of Sarcasm In Trucking/Transportation.

Tuition-free CDL Driving Academy - Truck Driver Jobs ...
Here's a good one. Terminals all over the USA. Schools move around, but still can go to a terminal near where you want to live, after school.
In Nevada; terminals in Sparks and Las Vegas.
Texas; several terminals.
Florida; several terminals.
