The free version is "Free to Prepare".
Basically the 1040EZ is free.
The 1040 that you will need if you itemize you will pay for in the end. But it works ok.
You just have to know your deductions. You will have to add up all your receipts that you saved, the portion of your phone that you deduct, etc. This will go in one box.
Then in another section it will have your perdiem deduction. If you don't know where to look for it you may miss it.
And you will have to do the math yourself. Figuring out your days out and your total deduction number. You add the total.
Then it takes it down to 80% of that, which is what you can deduct. I am home most weekends. So mine was only around 16,200 before it multiplied it by .8
I also own a home etc.
It does work fairly well. You just have to know your work deductions on your own.

Ya, I used the deluxe version and used the audit insurance as well.. even though my audit level was very low. The per diem goes in job related deductions under travel expense...At least I put mine there. I had 18,xxx dollars in per diem...so it added a good chunk to my change jar. Over all, I'm pleased with myself and the program.

I've used 3 different free 1040 tax programs. The free tax programs are good if you are a company driver and nothing complicated is going on. Mortgage, real estate taxes, children, 401(k) or IRA are OK but investment income, rental property, any kinds of business partnerships etc are not going to fit into the free tax programs. Turbo Tax is just one of the free programs. There is also Tax Act, Taxslayer and others. If you file a state income tax form you will usually need to pay extra. All of the free programs will "offer" you the chance multiple times when doing your taxes to buy one of their extras. Some of them hope you will get confused and not understand you don't have to buy the additional service. I think the free programs are only free if your income is at or below $75k -ish.

Not worried about the cost how up to date are they on deductions like the deductions on per diem has changed for this yr to 100% on the 69.00

Might as well not waste your time as a company driver, no more daily per diem and will never make enough deductions..stuck with the standard deduction now..time to pay up a couple of thousand bucks on top of the payroll tax I already paid so we can fund other countries and cell phones for illegals.

Unless your company offers perdiem....

I use it. The only glitch I found was they didn't update the per diem section to reflect the 2021 and 2022 covid relief thing where you can write off 100% of the per diem instead of 80.
