Isn’t 3 hour per axle for the entire job? And initially I took it for kingpins, you have to take all of the brake components off to do kingpins, so isn’t he double billing me?

He also did all the rear brakes, both axles. But I figured that’s 5-6 hours of labor at a dealer, yet alone a small shop that I “trust”

All the rear brakes are done when doing the seal. Like the steering, no added time

I'm not being snarky, but do it yourself once and then re-evaluate.

We do much of our own maintenance but are not mechanics. We have a service truck and good assortment of tools and a year or two of experience, but I can tell you that I appreciate the skill and efficiency of a good mechanic and knowing that the work was done correctly. That said, nothing pisses me off more than to pay a mechanic to do a job and find shortcuts or shoddy workmanship. If the work was done correctly and when promised I don't think that is out of line.

Ok say an 1 1/2 hours to replace a seal using a wheel dolly. Replace shoes, kits and anchor pin bushings is another 1/2 hr per wheel. Then since they are surely out board drums you have to remove the lugs, wheels and replace drums. That is another 1/2 hour per drum. Why are we replacing all the drive axle seals? It can take 1/2 to 1 hour to clean up from a leaking wheel seal.
I thank 10 hours is pretty tight.

No that is not included. R and R seal is just the seal.

Do we know if the king pins were froze in the axle bore?

What about the nut serts on the visor did they stay in tact or turn?

How bad was wheel seal as far as clean up?

Were the anchor pins froze or easy to do?

Flat rate time is always measured on a brand new vehicle with all tools laid out ready to go. I’m sure a few practice runs to get the routine down. Once a truck is a few years old and several hundred thousand miles you can throw that out the window. Sometimes things roll textbook and you make good time. Sometimes things go to hell in a handbag and what worked for the last exact situation won’t work at all this time

yeah but don’t you need to take all of it off to do king pins?

I know for a visit that it can be painful, so I’m not questioning. But charging full rate for king pins, while again, charge full labor for replacing drums and brake shoes.
And no, not major problems, I was there watching most of the work done, it’s a local mechanic I took my truck to for over 2 years.
