Buy the tools and learn to do it yourself or learn to like paying high prices.

Go question the shop about the bill and see what they say. They might take a second look or tell you to get lost

Hey, can I borrow your rate table?
I find it fascinating. No, I'm not a mechanic.

It will be a gift to the shop owner that do all my repairs.
    He'll get a good laugh.
    Maybe even post it somewhere.
That'll make his day, for sure.

    JoeyJunk and BigBob410 Thank this.

If I'm reading it right, they charged 3 hours per wheel to do shoes, drums and wheel seals?

Honestly seems a tad high on the labour to me. This is why I always advocate putting detail into the service reports. A couple complications could easily add a few hours to the bill. If it isn't explained adequately then people wonder if they were ripped off.

I've said this before, book time is BS. Its like they pull random numbers out of their ###. I had to do a service letter for a couple engines that had improperly torqued headbolts. If the gasket failed, warranty paid 6.5 hours to replace. Yeah good luck with that. Maybe if the engine was sitting on a stand in the middle of a bay you'd get close. With it installed, not a hope in hell you'd beat 10 hours on that job.

I guess the thing I heard so many years, "I've never met a mechanic like you" is true if someone thinks 34 hrs labor is labor is even close to fair.

If someone doesn't have the tools or experience to make king pins a 6 hour job, they need to shut off the open sign.

Same for those charging more than 1.5 for brakes and seal in the shop, and not previously leaking.

I'm sure somebody has done more of each than me, but not by much.

Every time I have a tech come into a shop bragging about…… I can do brake shoes in a half hour a wheel, I can do King pins in 5 hours…….blah…..blah.

The work was always shotty and they never cut the mustard to my quality standards. End up redoing it and taking 3 times longer.

Just sayin……Anyone can fly out a job and charge less. But at what cost?

    Clean, quality work takes time.

I don't think so on the brake / wheel seals, or the rest really.

Interesting they charge by the hour for shop supplies.
