If you have any unpaid child support , or repossessed cars or foreclosed mortgages or liens or judgements or lots of credit card bills that you just pay the
Minimum payment on , stuff like that.
If you can’t manage your personal money , that’s considered a security risk.
driving record, if you can’t obey the traffic laws ,
Usually it’s no DUIs in the last ten years , sometimes no DUIs ever .
Usually no reckless driving or street racing. Ever.
No more than two tickets in the last seven years and no tickets at all in the last three .
criminal history. If you’ve had any run ins with the law , ever been arrested etc , Probabaly not gonna get the clearance.
and , the biggie :
All this also applies to your parents , siblings, spouse and In laws if you’re married or ex’es if you’re divorced . And children if you have any .
the apple usually doesn’t fall far from the tree . If any of your family or friends have had issues with the law , it’s going to be a consideration in your clearance .
they also usually talk to your neighbors , former co workers etc .
Finding dependable drivers is hard.
now imagine finding dependable drivers that are responsible with the personal finances , and have never been arrested, and don’t cheat on their taxes , (the background check usually includes a behind the scenes IRS audit ) don’t drive their personal car like an idiot . etc
and I’m sure there’s a check of
Your social media , do you post long hate filled rants on Twitter or Facebook or Reddit or Instagram or the truckers report or other sites ?
And there’s other variables too .
I know someone that’s never been arrested , or had a DUI, but they just split from wife number FIVE.
Not a good sign when you’re looking for stability and responsibility .
All this is a good thing though.
The barrier to entry in truck driving isn’t very high ,
There’s lots of convicted criminals , people With terrible driving records and terrible credit scores ,
And lots of immigrants .
A driving job requiring a security clearance means you’re
Not competing with all
Those drivers for the job .
the security clearance eliminates about 90% of the eligible drivers .
And just filling out the form eliminates 2 out of 3 applicants .
It’s a lot of forms to fill out ,
Last ten years employment history and residence address of all your family etc
Names, addresses , birthdates , SS numbers etc , of everyone .
it takes a couple three weeks just to get the information together and fill out the form. Then another 6 weeks to six months waiting , most drivers who CAN pass the clearance don’t want to fill out the forms and wait .
I’d estimate that maybe 1 out of 100 or 150 drivers would be willing to put the effort into it and pass .born&raisedintheusa, WREN, Another Canadian driver and 5 others Thank this. -

I had a Secret Clearance that was suspended when I retired (It only had a couple more valid years on it anyway). Had I kept it, I would have lost it when I divorced due to my ex-wife's actions trying to ruin me financially.Albertaflatbed, Another Canadian driver, Northern Nomad and 2 others Thank this. -

Top "Secret Security" Clearance Means You'll Be Constantly Surveilled/Monitored, in MY Opinion, from some "conversations" with Drivers Having Claimed Doing Such Activities, Nationwide. (maybe their experiences were hallucinations!)
I KNOW I Don't Know What I Don't Know & Some Of What I Think I Know, or Knew, I'll NEVER Know All.

General Dynamics posts TS driver positions. Could be a lot of hoops to go through for not much better pay and a 6mo to 18mo hiring process. They are probably looking for Vets willing to obtain a CDL or already process one. From my personal experience, a job that requires a TS, has a lot of legal issues you open yourself up to that can make it completely not worth it.
