Can a knowledgeable broker please explain the rates these days? They don't make any sense with fuel prices at an all time high rates have plummeted. This is a friendly question.

Well, we have secret meetings where we decide what the rates will be. But mostly it's supply/demand.

The one who needs the freight moved decided it and then the broker takes the cut and then you get it

It's supply and demand... It doesn't matter if fuel is $10/gal, if you have 10 loads avaliable and 100 empty trucks looking, they aren't going to pay anything because they don't need too...

I agree, but how is demand low when there is a driver shortage that we keep hearing about? Is the driver shortage even real?

Demand can be down and still have a driver shortage. Big companies may be slow but they still want to fill their empty trucks

I experience driver shortage. Nobody wants to come work for me for $50 per day, but that's all I can pay with $2 freight

That is a manufactured shortage... if the ATA's members have empty trucks in their lot and not enough drivers to fill them, they claim a shortage, even if there is no freight for those trucks to haul. They just keep buying more trucks and claiming they can't find drivers, and this keeps programs open for incentivizing new drivers.

We're not short. Sure we have more trucks than full-time drivers, but we also employ part-time drivers to rotate through the remaining trucks. If you pay appropriately and treat drivers well, you won't have any problem keeping them in trucks.

No such thing as a driver shortage.
If there was then Swift drivers would have a Lambo as their second ride.
