noticed that my driver has been running with the diff lock in the on position while loaded running highway speeds. he says its better cause it helps with the weight when pulling a load. can someone please verify this? is this bad for the truck?

i started driving at a time when it was VERBOTEN to drive with it locked, unless you needed to get off a slippery surface, or out of deep snow.

i never drove with it locked, all my career.

however, some will say that today's trucks, you CAN drive with them locked.

however, i'd have to question the MPG's in doing so.

How so? Does that button activate a second engine?

It's perfectly fine on straight roads. Once you start turning, it eats the tires, because they are trying to cover different distances while being locked together.

Both axles drive anyways with it unlocked. All he's doing is chewing up tires for no reason.

And what happens if you have worn tires on one axle and new ones on the other? Some thing will explode soon.

@Mikesuburban1 Ask your driver where he gets his info. It might good a good idea to tell him to disregard that source.

The OP said diff lock not power divider. If the power divider is on all the time, it's not the best but not the end of the world.
If the diff lock is on all the time, the end of the world is getting closer.

In my school the diff lock is the power divider. Locking rears is a whole ‘mother’ thing.

A diff lock connects left to right side.
A power divider connects front and rear drive axles.

I don’t recall ever seeing the words ‘power divider’ on a switch plate on the dash.
