Yeah, had to open their own cdl schools in order to get more drivers.
Maybe 3 or 4 dozen cdl schools running now.
Married couple, how to start? (she only wants to drive with me)

I found out I have a cousin who has been an OTR driver more than 30 years. We talked for an hour and he had two recommendations that he was adamant about.
1) attend community college truck driver school for 8 weeks instead of 4 week CDL training
Its a better experience and you will learn on a stick shift
2) work for a small company at first instead of a large company
He has been a W2 employee with the same 70 truck company for over a decade.
He feels he has more flexibility and is paid the same. They accommodate his scheduling needs and he drives 3500 a week which is why he has been with them so long. In short, he feels like he is treated like a person instead of a number.
His recommendation was to do this for the first year.
I talked to the company rep and they said they would hire us as new drivers out of Community College school. They will then train us locally for 4 weeks and then give us a truck to team drive at $0.50 per mile.
Any thoughts?Another Canadian driver, xlsdraw and Speed_Drums Thank this. -
I believe that she went to school for 7 weeks.Another Canadian driver, xlsdraw, Speed_Drums and 1 other person Thank this. -
We’re back from sailing the Bahamas for the last 6 months. The boat is under contract to sell and we take our DOT medical exam /drug test tomorrow.
I may start a new post as well check boxes and get ready for CDL training at a local community collegetarmadilo, F4T6UY, Another Canadian driver and 3 others Thank this. -
@Nahbrown -- the pay & benefits at Chinatown's suggestions above (ODFL, & YRC) will probably be A LOT better than the small firm referred by your cousin.
Also--does your cousin's employer offer a pension? Free health insurance?
Something else to think about--with a possible recession looming--will your cousin's employer have enough freight base to keep everyone there on the payroll?
The takeaway: larger carriers (like ODFL and YRC) will have the freight base to weather even a deep, long recession--with smaller carriers, things are dicier when times get tough.

We never intended to sail around the world but we did sail the gulf coast, east coast and Bahamas. It was an amazing 4 years but now its time to build our bank accounts back up
the main downside for me was that the weather ruled my life. It determined where you anchored, if you moved, where you moved and how you moved. I spent a lot of time stressing over wind, wave and storm forecasts because our safety depended on it. On land I never worry about our house dragging across the field but a good storm could dislodge your anchor and send you adrift toward hazards.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Why would you be thinking about a company at $.5 when you could be looking at one at $.7259 with another pension?
BTW: Retired Army here. I'm earning a 401(k) these days (not an actual pension). If I had the same opportunity to make similar money to what I am now with another pension, I'd be all over that like a pack of dogs on a 3-legged cat. You have the opportunity to make nearly 50% more and earn a pension. If you don't like it, fine, go with your cousin's recommendation. If you do? You just won the lottery. -
I'll definitely be following this thread. I've been driving for 4 months, and now my wife had decided to get her CDL. She just enrolled in a program and we're in the process of securing funding for it. Once she's done, we hope to team drive asap. Like the OP, our only non-negotiable point is that I be her trainer. She will not go out alone with a stranger, male or female, for any length of time.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
