I live in MN. Even my personal class 6 truck has 5w40 in the crankcase, because it probably couldn't turn itself over at -20*. My smaller diesels get 0W40.
I don't use the truck enough to benefit from synthetic, probably only put 3,000 miles on it last year, and on pace to only put 300 on it this year. LOL. Dino oil is fine for me.
Diesel engine oil shortage predictions, will it happen?

Diesel Dave and vanlith Thank this. -
You compared your engine oil 15w40 to10w30....how about your 15w40 vs 5w40 or esp. 0w40 for fuel economy + protection.
Have you actually tried Rotella T6 or Moble Delvac 1.....5w or 0w or some other brand of those 2 top syn. oil? -
The 10w30 will offer the better economy than the 15w40, because 30 is not 40, thereby less resistance within the oil pump pushing the oil.
This is why a Prius uses 0W20. Heck, I've seen stupid-thin oils on the shelf recently, like 0W16, 0w15, or even 0w10. All in the name of fuel economy.vanlith Thanks this. -
Only bulk engine oil we had on the reels at the dealer was 0W-40 year round.
vanlith Thanks this. -
By aug. 19th with nothing being made at factory for nearly 3 months by then it will be impossible + all 15w even will be in sig. thinner supply by then or worse i am hearing from a Napa dealer up here who talks to mostly US sources.
