I live in MN. Even my personal class 6 truck has 5w40 in the crankcase, because it probably couldn't turn itself over at -20*. My smaller diesels get 0W40.

I don't use the truck enough to benefit from synthetic, probably only put 3,000 miles on it last year, and on pace to only put 300 on it this year. LOL. Dino oil is fine for me.

OK TY DRT.....considering you don't put many miles on a year + you still use syn. makes me think a decent % of at least ind. truckers are using it or should be using it if they live + drive their rigs mostly in the northern half of the USA + into Canada (from nov. to march that is) + lets put it this way if the diesel oil runs low or out by nov. due to no more additives to make the oil whole + someone was selling 0w or 5w online at amazon or others + a trucker had to pay more for it but had little to no choice if he wants to keep running he would leave his normal 15w tempor. at least to buy that stuff but considering he would prob. have to pay around double for the syn. that it is WAS normally worth ....which means if he was running 15w that would mean at least 3x the normal cost to fill up his crankcase but i would suggest to him if + when this happens later this year....You are getting the Best oil out there at the right time of the year with a long change oil life + with the lack of truckers, front end snow clearing loaders farm eqip. on + on you will be able to charge 2-3-4 times for you services for people desp. enough so in every likelihood that trucker or whatever will still come out on top $ + i have heard + know of somebody who has bought up a sheet load of syn. in anticipation of that coming shortage to sell back later this year + i am sure there are others out there esp. sellers on Amazon, Ebay + local online + i see that getting syn. 0w + 5w on Amazon even now is getting very scarce + the prices are hugely inflated + we are only in the middle of July not Nov. so its going to be interesting.....the early bird gets the worm more then ever here so Buy Buy Buy i suggest to everyone while you can + while you can is already not really true at all as explained in my opening thread post esp. esp. for syn. GL getting that in any quantity right now...not to mention the shortage of UREA from Russia + China that i believe will make DEF not out completely at any time later this year + next but in short or very short supply also so BUY that also guys while you legit can right now because if that runs short as you all know with your 2010 + later machines that will be a lot more sudden of a problem then the oil.

My wife thinks I am nuts with the amount of oil from all brands I have out in my shop. I bought most of it on clearance from the local parts houses knowing that it will only go up in price in the future. Things like 10w40 that I can use in my skid steer, 5 qt jugs for $1.49... I bought every one of the jugs on clearance, no matter what it was, and the big jugs line the back wall of my shop while the quarts are filling all the cabinets.

I always check the clearance rack at the local O'Reilly's at least once per month.

It will be Gold pretty soon DRT if things get as bad as i + many predict but well see....your forethought will convince your wife to never doubt you again LOL. Maybe you can sell some of the oil to oil starved truckers + other diesel equipment operators at a nice profit + take your wife to Florida in mid Jan. on a vacation.

I'm already sending her on a cruise with her sister in November. They can soak up the sun and I can drink beer in front of the TV without having to answer questions. LOL

Some have more oil consumption with the synthetic. I switched to 15w-40 blend and add less oil now. What’s the point if you have to keep adding. Seems my engine prefers 15w-40 over the 10w-30. I’ll deal with the loss of fuel economy and take the protection of 15w-40. Yes, it is a emissions engine.

Interesting that syn. oil has more consumption sometimes...i have never heard that...i guess Diesel engines are like people somewhat aka everyone is different....along with the Brand of oil used that could make a dif. also.
You compared your engine oil 15w40 to10w30....how about your 15w40 vs 5w40 or esp. 0w40 for fuel economy + protection.
Have you actually tried Rotella T6 or Moble Delvac 1.....5w or 0w or some other brand of those 2 top syn. oil?

40 is 40 is 40 at operating temp. They don't offer better economy than the other, they are merely more fluid in the extreme cold. 15w is like tar below zero, whereas 0w is like 15w at 50*. (not exactly, I know, but its the easiest visualization I can come up with on the fly)

The 10w30 will offer the better economy than the 15w40, because 30 is not 40, thereby less resistance within the oil pump pushing the oil.

This is why a Prius uses 0W20. Heck, I've seen stupid-thin oils on the shelf recently, like 0W16, 0w15, or even 0w10. All in the name of fuel economy.

Only bulk engine oil we had on the reels at the dealer was 0W-40 year round.

Well that's near impossible to find today either in bulk but esp. in automotive stores....double esp. Rotella + Mobil.
By aug. 19th with nothing being made at factory for nearly 3 months by then it will be impossible + all 15w even will be in sig. thinner supply by then or worse i am hearing from a Napa dealer up here who talks to mostly US sources.
