Hello, i've gotten a ton of questions answered here and i'm thankful this place exists. Currently waiting on my hair to grow back out in order to pass a hair follicle after receiving a pre-employment letter to a CDL school (bottom of the barrel, but it's the entry i need) and it's given me plenty of time to find new questions to ask. i was curious about the legality of carrying firearms.
In my state, you don't need a permit to open carry, and i carry my pistol everywhere, but it only recently occurred to me that as a OTR driver, i'd be crossing multiple states that all have differing levels of regulations, not including company policies that may be against it either.
Does anyone here working for a company (not owner/op) carry a firearm? And if so, what if any hoops did you have to jump through to make that possible? Or is this overall unlikely for DOT drivers?
May seem like a stupid question, but i ended a gunman at a gas station in 2012 and would've lost my life if i hadn't, and ever since, this baby has been glued to my hip and sees more body contact than my phone. I'd imagine that i'd be making a lot of city-walks during rest/downtime and i wouldn't feel as safe in today's environment without the ability to defend myself. Thank you for any information.

I'd focus on passing the drug test before you think about carrying a gun in the truck.

I would ask the person or company under whose Authority you are operating first. I suspect most of them will say no. If you do get a green light I would then start checking the interstate laws. Being aware there are some states if you get caught with a firearm you might have legal issues.
