Guy's I'm going to pick some brains right now. Would I be crazy to buy a cheap day-cab and an older end dump and try to make money with it? or should I try to buy a tri-axle dump? In a year or so I plan to own my own truck. I never did like the thought of making money for other people, I was a mechanic at my last job so the repairs and maintenance are no problem. I'm mainly looking into getting into hauling dirt/coal etc, btw my fiance' makes almost enough money at her job to cover our expenses...don't hold back, if im crazy and stupid. tell me.

Well just from what I have been told bucket work in your area is cheap. To many trucks and guys that will do it for cost or below cost. I don't know about hopper work down that way. You just need to check with companies in your area that pull dumps or hoppers and that higher owner operators and see what they say. That would be where I would start before I bought a truck. The way the economy is and work being slow along with cheap rates it may be time just to buy a cheap truck and park it in the driveway and wait till work picks up and rates get better.

The door greeter at Wal-Mart tonight was telling me he doesn't do to bad working their and his lady freind brings in a pretty good check each month. I know all the hours I put in and being away from home and with more money going out then what is coming in I think he is doing better then I am.

It is already foggy here and in the low 20's but no freezing rain yet. I hope I can get my truck up the hill from the shop tomorrow. I have a pretty good incline and a stop sign at the top of it. I guess my wife is going to play pilot car when I leave so I can hammer down and blow the stop sign.

I like Big Johns idea of getting a cheap truck and waiting for things to get better. It probably just depends on what the rates are in your area.

12* here and foggy. Sounds like you will have an interesting start to this run.

No I didn't take the pic or see him but I found it on another site and I think the guy lives in Nebraska or Iowa not for sure but he takes lots of truck pics in the area so I thought that may be your husbands truck. Looks good even when it is dirty. lol

That will make a good pic for the screen saver. I can't stand to have mine dirty either but the places we all go a wash job doesn't last long. I had my tanks and wheels polished by some guys in Little Rock awhile back and I went to Chicago two weeks ago and run in that chemical they put on the roads and it just ate it up so when I washed it next it looked like crap so I just had them spray it with acid to clean it up. I will have it polished again come spring. We are not like the vans and reefers that never leave the payment. lol
