I've only ever heard of them running one on a dedicated pulling truck that does nothing else.

What a technician uses for diagnostics is not typically what the engineer uses to calibrate an ECM. As an example, on Cummins technicians use Insite for diagnostics while calibrations are modified with Calterm. Tuning is a slippery slope these days with large EPA crackdowns. It can be done but tuner has to get EO through CARB testing to verify emissions compliance. Changing calibration files (flash file) is not the same as actual tuning. Good tuning is possible, but few and far between. The crackdown of EPA has actually weeded out some crappy tuners and forced others to truly learn how to do it better. If you wanna play with tuning, read about HP tuners, EFI live, EZ LYNK etc and try it on your car/pickup vs your lively hood truck.

Friend of mine has had a diesel shop for 25 years and is still out in a place that is considered country for now. There is a “performance” diesel shop that opened up around 10 years ago about a quarter mile away. Nothing but field in between them. They can hear engines blow on the dyno from time to time. Lol!

Stand alone ECM's are popular in all aspects of motorsports.

I'd never heard of it being done on big trucks until recently. Companies like Holley have been doing it forever on cars and the like I know.

Most are hush about what they are doing, it is very competitive. If you listen to sled pulling with the 3406E/ C15, the 40 pins seem to misfire less above 2600 RPM than the faster 70 pin ECM. Standalone ECM can allow better timing control in all RPM range.

I use a cloned copy of ET and a password generator. I know I can flash 40pins and 70pins up to BXS. Ive been told the version I have won’t do later serials but I don’t know for sure, I’ve never tried.

That is not tuning, that is flashing. Totally different things.

Depends how you look at it. A lot of those “tunes” are just offshore Cat files someone got their hands on same as I did.
