What is all this money you are talking about? I have been told you can’t make any money as an owner op. Biggest problem I have is that don’t feel like working as hard anymore.

A data scientist is someone who can take all the data from a company and put it into one file in an organized fashion. Everything, customer receipts, fuel receipts, maintenance receipts, all data sources for the company that are outputted in a spreadsheet can be fed into the 'data lake'. Simple programs are set up to automate the collection of this data. So that all this information is constantly and automatically being funneled into one place in an organized way. Once this data foundation is accomplished the process of looking at the data begins by the data scientist. Normally when hiring the company will want to hire a data scientist who will work closely with the marketing team. When enough data is organized then a third party software can be set up to make predictions based on that data. Now Im talking about artificial intelligence. The data is fed into an algorithm to make predictions based on a certain settings. Like for example, what inventory needs to be purchased to prepare for a certain season. Or what is a specific customer likely to order next. Or how much product is being packed into a certain box. And is the space in that box being used efficiently. There are tools that can instantly report these numbers to maximize cubage for air freight which is expensive. DHL uses this. In todays age data is gold, but most companies only use 1% of their data. It is the job of the data scientist to turn data into revenue as a new source of revenue.

Ahhh, I'm working on that. Still recovering from the Brown Vow of Poverty.

But I DO have a new refrigerator, dishwasher, washer, dryer, sump pump, ejection pump and bedroom AC unit within the past year. So we're getting there.

So I guess the rest of us are transportation “Engineers”…….from your definition of a data scientist, in simple English, that’s sounds like a bookkeeper/accountant.

A real data scientist you will find working in teams at the largest of transport companies such as YRC or FedEx or name any of the real big tech savvy companies. And they will have diplomas or degrees from MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology or some other college with Data Science programs. Anywhere there is extremely complicated work going on to squeeze that last bit of revenue out of company and competitor data you will find a team of data scientists working closely with a marketing team. The position is relatively new to trucking therefore only the largest of companies will employ them. As the rest of the industry catches up the profession will become more well known and trickle down into the smaller companies. Even the company I work for, a very large company, is "behind" on data management from what I have seen.

Engineers, well, you could put it that way. Its a hell of a lot of responsibility nowadays to operate a big truck. The bar is always being raised for minimum level of training.

Yes. Analytics is working with data to discover significant patterns and communicating those patterns so that they may be used. The data can be fed into an algorithm that makes predictions based on historical patterns. Knowing exactly what a customer is going to order on a specific season, then offering them a special deal customized just for them based on margins fair for both parties, and having this all done by a computer, and email. That is the power.
