Just FYI, but I went to school at Western Truck School at West Sacramento back in 1988. If I remember, the course cost around $3,600 and lasted six weeks. I got a student loan for the school, the dive motel was on my own nickle. I never drove anything that grossed 80K or drove in the mountains until I got into "the real world". Schneider doesn't sound so bad to me.....
BTW, I had a great instructor who told us something right off the bat that turned out to be extremely true....."There are no eight hour days in the trucking industry..."

Let me begin by saying that I am a trucker wannabe who has explored different companies and training options. I filled out a resume on some site (can't remember which one now), and was contacted by Schneider. Remember THEY CONTACTED ME. As someone who has never driven, all the red tape that goes along with becoming a trucker can be overwhelming. Add to that the fact that I live in a rural area and it is not easy to just get a physical, etc. I had to drive 100 miles to do the fingerprinting stuff.
Anyway, all along my Schneider recruiter knew where I lived. We kept in contact, and things seemed to go smoothly. I took my learner's permit test, and the first time I failed by one question. I called him and told him, and he said no problem and we scheduled my training to be in Carlisle, PA. I was to take the test the next week and call him. I took the test and passed, and called. I was so happy to pass, and finally get everything in order. When I called him he seemed happy, then mentioned I would have to get some papers to him and asked me my zip code, and I told him. He left the line for a second, came back on and said he was sorry, there were no openings in my area and pretty much just said good luck.
I was shocked. He knew all along where I lived. He didn't even ask if I would be willing to relocate. I was pretty much assured in all our previous conversations that I WOULD be trained, and I WOULD drive for Schneider. I even quit my two part-time jobs I had, not to mention all the costs associated with this effort.
Anway, I guess I would say if this is the "Schneider Way" to treat people as a number rather than as a human being, then their way SUCKS big time! -
You would be amazed how many people have had similar problems with SNI. I know one current driver for them who had to basically fight her way into the seat because of where she lived. Others were told they would have to find a team partner before they would be hired because of where they lived. Needless to say, they found other companies to train them. Being fair to SNI though, they are a very large company, so pretty much everyone is a number to them. I hope you can find another company as well. Best of luck.

I will say this , Everyone in the first year eats crap, You have to take alot in your first year, I am going on 10 Plus years from Bull Wagons, Flatbed, Rock Hauling, Reefer and dry Van. I started out with M.S Carriers when Mike Starns Owned it Lock Stok and Barrell. I was a Owner Op With K.A.T out of Chesterton, IN and Malone Flatbed Division. I have since been Leased on with Schneider National I am Happier now than I have been in 10 Plus Years of driving. The Freight is there if you want it. It is important to understand that ALL NEW DRIVERS not going to get the highest pay anywhere you go and If you do You have beat the odds Usualy a year or so of safe driving you can go anywhere you want, There are bad companies out there however Schneider is not one of them, The extra time they take with a student is to make sure you understand how to operate your truck safetly Goes with their motto Safety First and Always.
I have always had miles ( Sometimes Freight is soft )
Never Been forced to drive Tired
and Home when I choose ( Owner Op Benifit )

My husband drove for schneider and they almost made him miss our daughter's birth because they didnt want him to come home. He had been out for almost 3 weeks. On top of that he was only allowed to come home for 3 days AND they didnt pay him more then $350 a week no matter how many miles he drove. I do not see how people can sit there and say they are a good company.

I've decided to go with Schneider. I started out talking with Swift and really liked the recruiter but it was impossible to get hold of him. Most of the contact (90%) was done by email. I am pre hired with Swift but I will be declining the position. For reasons I don't need to mention here I couldn't go to the Swift school so I was to get my training with a local school that Swift contracts with. To say the least I became very dissatisfied with the school. They told me I could go to their night school which started in two weeks, that they would have a slot for me. So foolishly I waited only to learn that they slotted me for day classes, (I still run my own business and I work nights, that was explained to them). I was then told I would have to wait another 3 weeks if I wanted nights! Phone calls were never returned, if I didn't contact them I was pretty much forgotten.
All that prompted a phone call to Schneider. What a difference! A recruiter who calls you back, gives you step by step instructions, hey this is a new field for me so it's nice to get a little hand holding. And a professionalism I have not been getting from Swift. I start my training in Feb so I will check back in and add my comments about my experiences. I'd like to thank Turbo for wealth of info he has imparted in his post, many of them have guided me in my decisions in this journey. After 27 years of self employment in a commercial service industry I'm looking forward to the career change and hopefully meeting some nice folks too. Attitude really is everything and I will be working from that premise as I venture into this field that is called trucking. Wish me luck! Hello All,
I am a newbie to the site, I must say I love it here after reading lots of the posts, everyone seems to be very nice and informative, I believe I have found a new home. I would like to try Schneider after reading the posts here. I am an IT guy, but frustrated with it and would like to try something else, get out of the office's and on the road! Going to get my permit started next week and review TX Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook this weekend, green as can be, LOL, but optimistic. I am in Dallas, TX. Has anyone trained in Dallas?
