East height limits.

You got to know where you are going. Through Chicago on the skyway, Downtown Pittsburgh or many other cities in the east you are screwed at 13’7. Going around many of them and you are sometimes good at 14. I am guessing the hourly pay they are giving will be worth learning new areas? Most of the sleeper trucks I see hauling “Hourly” for GM are hauling half loads. They don’t generally have enough units on to get tall. The guys hauling spot market out of Ft Wayne are packing them on and running tall.

 

Everyone and their Brother with a one car or more is hauling them now. If they had paid a reasonable wage to start with their normal carriers would be handling the work. Oh well.

 

When working hourly I would go by the old UPS Feeder Motto. Go slow and make more dough. For Carhaul I would modify it slightly. Go slow, run low and make more dough!

 

Are you running a truck GPS? I use my Garmin's height feature all the time. I've used Copilot, too. Hammer is a free app that has that capability, too.

It's not foolproof, as you kind of have to keep an eye on the routing to notice it's asking you to go an unexpected way (at least if you want advance notice) , but it works.

 

And as @Banker mentioned, away from downtown areas, there's few issues until your well over 14'. The one bridge that's eaten multiple roofs is the one at Jackson MI on I-94, going west. It's only 13'8" or 13'9" in the right lane.

 

If I remember correctly 23 in Michigan had a low bridge out in the middle of nowhere not much taller than 13’6 but you could ramp it. My memory could be off since it has been many years since I have been in Michigan but I feel like I routinely took 39 to get over to 75. I remember it was on the same road that Roush had a large facility we would occasionally deliver loads to. Definitely don’t run tall through Detroit on 94.

 

You won’t see Cooper drivers hauling tall out of there. It may be a former Allied/Cooper driver sucking up that Big Money currently available on the spot market. I have a good friend doing it right now, but he knows very well where he can run tall. I can’t blame them for packing them on with the money currently available.
