200lbs to seat bearings, back off a turn. 50 lbs preload then back off per specs. All done while turning the wheel. I just learned that by turning the wheel one way and back the other way after each torque, then re torquing
again you can sometimes get a little more turn from the nut. I got each wheel a bit tighter doing it this way. One on the 200lb torque, the other on the 50lb torque. Both affect the final result, after backing off the proper amount. The back off amount and final torque values of the lock nut depend on Spindle thread count, and if it’s a steer, drive, or trailer.Dino soar, Hammer166, rollin coal and 2 others Thank this. -
Those threads are smashed flat. It's from tightening it while being crossthreaded no doubt. I'm thinking of trying to add a tang style lock washer right before the lock nut to help avoid this in the future. It would at least prevent the lock nut from backing off. Spicer doesn't show it on their fiche but I think it'll still fit.

The threads are flat on the outer nut because it was rolling around on the axle shaft. No other reason. I have seen this with the threads all gone and completely smooth.

Double check cross reference on the nut, but these are mostly idiot proof, only drawback is youll also need a 4 3/8" socket 8 point. (Otc 1917)

The smashed threads are more smashed and less smashed in different areas surrounding the circumference of the inner nut. This certainly indicates the nut was spinning while simultaneously being crushed under the spindle as the endplay increased from gradual loosening. It simply wasn't tightened (or at least not to 300 lbs) when installed.
I picked up some locking rings to add in between the nuts and existing "locking ring" as an added measure of security. I hope it all fits on the spindle and leaves a few extra threads showing for good measure.Last edited: Sep 20, 2022

I’ve never seen a set up without some type of washer to lock the outer but in place. Bend type, or Allen screw type. This stuff drives me nuts. The one piece pro torque seems like the way to go. Bearings perform better under a very slight preload. With the 2 nut system, it’s impossible to achieve. Instead you settle for at least .001 the thickness of one sheet of paper.
