    Dunno which would be worse,
To convince the cops you have a medical issue and blacked out , or just admit that you fell asleep.

i feel asleep once and hit a police car .
They didn’t get too upset about it and I just got a ticket for failure to maintain lane.
I hopped out , apologized, asked if they were in, said I fell asleep , and asked how many tickets I was gonna get , and they said “one should do it “

    Totaled their car ,

If they pursue blacking out as a cause, they’ll be disqualified for life. It’s a disqualifying condition and there’s not a doctor on the planet who’d risk signing off on a future physical card for them.

Low blood sugar can cause that. Had it happen to me.
Felt myself going down, got on the brakes and aimed for the shoulder. Dash cam showed I was down to 35 mph when I passed out. Nice ditches around here. Didn’t hit anything, just got stuck in the mud.
Cam showed I was out for about 40 seconds.
Just had to see a doc a few times to confirm it wasn’t something else. Back on the road in two weeks.

I've never blacked out, but one time I stopped at a J and took a shower in the middle of the day.....I had time on the load and usually there's no wait in the middle of the day......so, anyway I made sure to wash my ears real good and off I went. I went probably less than 10 miles and all the sudden I lost all spatial reference.....it was like floating and I couldn't understand what was going on. This went on for about 30 seconds or so, but it scared the crap out of me......especially since I was going through a construction zone at the time. Later I figured I must have gotten water in my inner ear and had a bout with vertigo.
Scary stuff, people. But I still wash my ears.

4 a.m.? He fell asleep, I doubt he blacked out. I wonder how long he had been driving that shift?

Too long if he blacked out and took out a utility pole! Sometimes you have to know when to shut it down and take a break. On some of my loads I will find a place to shut down if I’m fatigued and take a 1-2 hour nap if necessary.
It can make a world of difference!;)
