Compressor leaking, overhaul or replace it?

I would say most diesel repair shops could handle a compressor. Make sure and get a quote for a rebuild vs putting a new one on. Might just be worth a new one.

 

You're better off replacing the whole thing. After you pay someone to R&R, rebuild, and buy parts, you'd have saved money and been back to work quicker with a new one

 

Usually swap it out for a reman. Prices are hit and miss. $600-$1200. Shop around. Looks like a typical tuflo 550. Yours looks to be a Reliabilt. Detroit Diesel reman brand. I found my best price at a Freightliner Dealer. It’s a midland brand reman. Should have a tag with serial # on it. Need the proper compressor for whatever engine you have. Otherwise the Dealer can go off your vin#. Did you blow the head gasket? I had a Truck that used to blow them. I’d carry an extra in my glovebox. Later I figured out, it blew because it didn’t have a pressure safety pop off valve. I think the Governor has one built in, but doesn’t always protect it. Still need a pressure safety valve. They’re not expensive, screws into the head. I don’t see one on yours, it’s probably on the backside. Either way, be sure to get a new Governor. Amerak brand is about half the price of a Bendix. They’re good, as long as it’s brand new. Rebuilt Amerak brand is no good. Also get a new safety valve. Be glad you have the old style compressor, and Governor. Much cheaper than the newer ones. Might want to make sure your air dryers good. Maybe Change it out, or at least change the filter. Remans are usually $200 or less. I’d check Fleetpride as well as the Dealer. Look online, once you get the part#s if you can’t get one locally.

 

Looks like the head gasket is seeping oil. If it is still working properly, its not a 911. But its time for a replacement. A reman is around $700 for the part plus labor.
