This is the stock power cord that comes with the Radio , Anyone upgraded to a heavier gauge wire I would of thought with a radio like this the power lead would be Better quality

Looks like the power cord that most CB radios use. Any idea what gauge wire it is? I can't tell by looking at the picture. What size fuse is it?
I can't remember off the top of my head what the pep power is on the Stryker 955, but I would think the power cord should be at least 12 gauge wire. Although SSB isn't 100% duty cycle so the power cord that comes with the radio should be okay. I wouldn't think the factory would be dumb enough to skimp on the power cord size. You can upgrade the wire but the connector will still be the same, which may or not be a problem.

Hey and Thanks for your reply ,
The fuse is 15 amp glass fuse stock radio Cord
It’s not 12 maybe 16 gauge I plan to go with 10 Gauge just trying to find a plug that opens up so I can solder heavy gauge wire and also Add a blade fuse holder , problem with these radio power cords they are molded and can’t be opened .

This is a breaker that made a new power lead with 8 gauge and now doesn’t see any voltage Loss

I'm not quite sure what you are saying.... is this a power cord you made? Eight gauge wire would be over kill for this radio, plus it would be harder to work with installing in a mobile environment. Doing some quick research, this radio puts out around 70 watts ( I assume that's if you scream into the microphone) on SSB. On a support stryker radio website they state that "The SR-955HPC will draw no more than 13 amps at full power", so I guess that's why the factory uses a 15 amp fuse. If the radio draws 15 amps, then you would usually use a 14 gauge wire, 20 amps = 12 gauge, 25 amps = 10 gauge wire. Nothing wrong with over kill as far as wire size go, but to me it isn't necessary, but that's just me. I do use the blade fuse holder with my higher power radios, because of the better quality over the plastic round fuse holders.

Edit: Those numbers for amps and wire gauge, are just a rule of thumb for a mode like SSB, or low power AM. If you are using a mode like FM or RTTY that really labors the PA in the radio, then I would recommend bumping the wire size up a gauge.

That’s just an idea I had , haven’t Actually gone ahead with it yet looking at 8 gauge it isn’t as easy to work with when installing , I’m currently looking at a lighter Adapter with slightly heavier Cable just to get me started
Thanks for explaining the Amp draw and gauge of Wire I’ll make a note of that .

Your welcome. I guess I will have to eat my words that, it would be dumb for Stryker to sell radios with too light of a power cord. It sounds like they are doing just that. I still think 12 gauge wire would work just fine. At any rate you use what ever gauge you feel comfortable with.

I went through this with a 955 not long ago. One of mine has had what they call “all the way mods” done to it. According to a bird meter stock it was averaging about 21 watts and pep around 85 with the stock cord. After mods it was averaging 40 and pep 115 still with the stock cord. Just keying up not talking on am it dropped .5-.6 volts and modulating it lost around 1.2 volts. On the same meter within a few minutes of testing it modded with the stock cord an upgraded 8 gauge cord was used and the loss was .1 volt dead key and .2 modulating . Average power went up from 40 watts to 48 and pep went up from 115 to 130. 8 gauge cord is not overkill it’s around about what they need, this is having a piece of the stock cord coming out of the plug just long enough to crimp 8 gauge to it. In my truck I ran 4 gauge wire from the battery to inside the cab and have about a foot long piece of the upgraded 8 gauge cord hooked to it.

    stacks Thanks this.
