We were called Spec 5's with a club card.
The commissioned guys had regular jobs, whereas all we did was fly.
They had to log 'X' hours every 90 days or so to keep their flight pay.
So they would come to me and say, 'Hey man, can you take me for a ride"?
I was always like, "sure, man, let's go.
It was a very happy time

Yeah , my nephew was looking at the WOFT High school to flight school .

he was told that if you wanted to fly , don’t go the commissioned officer route since they fly for a little while
And then drive a desk for the remainder of their duty time .

he wound up attending a CDL
Class at a community college and got recruited by a heavy haul company that hires and trains new drivers with no experience , if they can pass the background check. Which requires a spotless driving , criminal , and credit record due to the type of cargo they haul.

Do they still have the WO training program going? I heard they shut it down but I don't really stay up with that stuff any more. That was many years ago.
I have a great grandson looking to fly and he wants to fly helicopters. I'll mention it to him.

See below, he got here before I did.
The program was brought back in 2003. High School to Flight School... and I believe its still ongoing from what I can tell.
Spec 5, 6, and 7 have gone the way of the dodo over 30 years ago. Probably closer to 40.

I noticed that your TV family sitcoms were the first to push that idea starting in the 80s. The stupid son goes to the military. All the other kids go to the big university. Dad was the blue collar dummy in the house and he went to trade school.

Real world talk, for a young Man, there’s nothing better than going into the military. Why? It’s the best chance you have to learn discipline and self discipline while learning a skill. Without some sort of discipline, a male will be worthless.

In ancient times, we learned discipline through our fathers, but that another subject for another time….

I wouldn't know, that's what the sailors told me as they staggered back to the ship.
    Disgusting!
