A responsible, sensible, person will have no problem carrying a gun in his truck.

Like everything else in life, some common sense goes a long ways !!!

Was stopped the other day, in Ohio, for speeding. Did my "Duty to Inform" as per Ohio law, he ask what kind of piece I was packing. That's it, told me to slow down and I was on my way. I have only had one take posession of my firearm for the duration of the stop and return it when we were done. I don't see what the big discussion is about, just follow each states laws and drive on.

The debate is settled, how about some other actual experiences instead of 113 pages of debate?

Oh, and I open carry everywhere except at shippers/receivers, got into trouble over that one. Boss told me to keep it covered from then on, at shippers/receivers.

Southern pride, you may be right however, i spent 31 years as a safety inspector and investigator, and in my 31 yrs, if ever i conducted a road-side inspection and in the course of that inspection, i saw a fire arm, no matter the jurisdiction, i got the state police on the scene and I gave the driver helllll!!! No need to have a fire arm in a commercial vehicle, and yes even in southern states that are pro gun... The driver quoted what you said, and guess what, i felt my safety was in question i call the state police and have the weapon removed until the inspection is completed.. Now if you come up north, i.e. NY, NJ, CT, you are going to jail!!!!!!

Spoken like a true #######! Just one of the reasons I no longer go to your state because I've never met a cop from there that wasn't an ####### or to many people in general that weren't!

You say no need to have a firearm in a cmv? Have you ever slept in a 48" coffin on wheels on the street in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Detroit, Miami, etc.......... I didn't think so. I have and I #### sure won't do it without my piece by my side. Besides there is not any law against carrying in a cmv in case you hadn't heard. Oh wait I forgot your to busy harrassing cmv drivers for exercising their 2nd amendment rights. Now you should be so proud of yourself. And yeas I am aware of state laws especially in NY that prohibit having a firearm blah blah blah, but let's face it I'd rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6 any day of the week. Have a nice day!:biggrin_25510:

So basically what you are saying is you enforced your opinion on others? Because you didn't like the idea of a firearm in a truck you were harder on the driver. Are you going to take responsibility for my safety while I'm in the sleeper? I choose to carry a firearm. It is my right to do so. Who are you to decide what's best for me and my family? :biggrin_25516:

Motor carrier inspector's comments are the reason it pays better to run east coast. it's a sh*hole with ##### people. You never see an ad for a driver job that says "100% no south"

Motor carrier inspector (and most of the rest of the northeast) is the exception...not the rule.

I have dealt with cops and DOT in a few states...and a properly carried pistol was never an issue.

I understand why some people don't really like the idea of guns in trucks...just listen to channel 19 on the CB to figure that out. Road rage, hot heads, and just plain stupid people abound...

But that does not change the issue...my own personal safety is more important than anybody's fear of my pistol. Nobody has anything to fear from my pistol unless they threaten my life...they can have the truck or the load, I'll help them hook it up if they only want the trailer...

The most common fear is the fear of somebody "going off the deep end" for no good reason...Heck, I myself have a pretty short fuse and VERY little patience for stupidity and rude behavior, but I'm not going to start shooting just because somebody jumps in front of me at a receiver or shipper.

I have been around guns since early childhood...I know how to handle them safely, and effectively. Sadly though...that is not true for everybody.

The guy that has no experience with guns of any type, then goes and buys a Glock just because they are popular (not knocking Glocks)...then proceeds to shoot himself or somebody else while he's trying practice his draw...it has happened thousands of times, and will happen more.

But again...nobody has the right to judge ME based on the actions of another.

Motor Carrier Inspector...You fear a man with a gun...is it the man or the gun that scares you? There are PLENTY of people around who are quite dangerous even unarmed...you could be standing right next to one of them and never know it. Not all of them are big guys with tattoo's all up their arms...

Its a stereotype...and an unfounded one that scares you.

A thug is usually carrying a Glock mexican style (stuffed down the front of his pants or something similar)...that is cause for suspicion, I agree. But not cause for overreaction.

A guy carrying a custom built 1911 (upwards of $2000) in a custom made leather IWB holster and 2 spare mags on his belt...is NOT a cause for concern, especially if he is quick to inform the officer that he is armed, and legally so. This guy is calm and coolheaded, willing to answer any question asked of him. Even willing to surrender his weapon without a fuss until the traffic stop (or inspection) is over. Why do you fear this guy? I wonder because it could be me...

You're just doing your job...I bear no malice towards you for that. I'm just doing my job too...and doing what I can to make sure I get back home to my family safely.

Has the pistol ever helped me do that? Yes
Did I have to shoot anybody? No
Would I shoot somebody to defend my life? You bet...without a 2nd thought.
And lastly, would I lose any sleep over shooting somebody in self defense? Nope...he took the risk, and picked the wrong guy.

With all that said...states do very greatly on how they handle this stuff...my 2 incidents were in GA and SC. NY is just too weird for me...beautiful state, upstate anyway...looks alot like my home in the Smoky Mountains of east Tennessee, but their views on firearms are literally Draconian, and a good ole country boy like me just don't fit in up there.

No need for a weapon in a CMV??? What about Jason (Jasons law), or the scores of other truckers that have been killed for the freight on their trucks. We are Americans, and with that honor comes the right to self protection...and cops are too heavy to carry.
