Only once, but it was an oilfield position and the training/equipment was all day cabs. The company paid us hourly, put us up in lodging, and we did a day of HR stuff, followed by a couple classroom days for all the individual safety training courses each customer required for their "sticker" (for your hard hat, shows you are certified to be on their location, updated periodically by a refresher course), and finally a complete week at their training center, where we did hands-on training exercises for the proper way to open a hatch without gassing yourself, SCBA training, measuring and weighing the different products, proper open-top and frac tank procedures, loading fluids of differing types with gear and vacuum pumps, etc. It was a valuable experience and had nothing to do with driving in a truck with a trainer.

Afterward, we were released to the yards in which we were assigned and sent out for an additional 2 weeks with a trainer to perform these operations in real life. Only after we proved ourselves and then "tested out" with a different trainer were we released on our own to work. It was all day cab, and we would go "home" at the end of our shift (I lived in an RV park across the street from the yard so I could always walk to and from work no matter the weather).

As for regular OTR? Nope, never.

Well that makes perfect sense in the scenario that you described. I mean that is specialty work aside from just driving. But a basic OTR type job. I’m just not interested in going out with a trainer. Lol it’s like, “been there done that“. As most of us do I get a little bit set in my ways as to how I manage my life out on the road. I’m as flexible as they come as far as how I run and will bend over backwards to get loads on time. As far as like managing myself? All that goes out the window and it’s messy when you’re on the road with a trainer.

Are you a major leaguer trying to sign on with the A or AA farm club?

Local to where I live, but OTR. I’m just starting with another company. I didn’t take the position above….Just finished my first week with the new company and will run through the holidays. Coast to coast loads, 70 CPM, 80CPM, East coast. It’s refer and they run HARD, time sensitive loads, but the company is legit and treats their drivers like family. Not fake Family like many do. Lol …So I’m happy. As you know I shopped around for a very long time. It looks like five years being out here, keeping my record clean finally paid off. The last company I was at gave us extra time pretty much on our loads. So these high pressure times are a bit of an adjustment for me. Really no 14 to 16 hours off duty days like I had at the other company. But I do like the long open runs.

Thanks man! You’ve been a big help as well. Yeah I think I may have found my final landing spot. When you’re out on the road they do run you hard, but they’re very flexible with the days off. and all that. Just super nice people all the way around. Trucks are loaded! Even came with satellite, CB, Boise seats, new bed, APU, big fridge, freezer, the works. They love their drivers here. Now I just gotta keep the record clean and do my part. Lol
