I’d be curious to see the employee handbook and what it says regarding advances, if there even is one. Because if it’s not spelled out all he has to say is it’s common practice in this industry to draw advances on your fuel card. The OP better hope he has proof that taking advances is prohibited at his company.Another Canadian driver, jcrack08, Coffey and 7 others Thank this. -

Yeah...this is a hilarious story. Kind of like a prelude for brothers Cohen or Tarantino movie. I can't help but feel a little bit of affinity for the dude - pretty original antihero.
BTW: I think when I got my own authority, I was required to have a hiring protocol, part of which consisted in verifying previous employments. So I hired myself, and called my previous work place to ask if I did not lie about my job there on the application. Everything checked out ok but I did not bother to ask them how good a worker I was but maybe I should have because I don't recognize myself for being so laid back and lazy lately. ha ha ha ha ha
You can't see what you hire then don't hire. -
And then you meet these people at truck stops offering discounted fuel or truck parts. LOL LOL LOL One of them was even ready to swap tires, he said his company just put brand new ones on the tractor...and the story is all the same about them being victimized and mistreated by their employers. I mean, in their minds, you suppose to find affinity for them and help them screw their bosses.

Cheer up OP
Here's a nice song for consolation...

Was the driver specifically told no cash advances?
Honestly any cash advance should have to be approved. I had mine set to 25 a day for usual truck stuff lubricants could be charged with fuel. If you needed a wash out tire whatever I was gonna have to approve it. Any receipts not turned in were with held from driver wages. All receipts whether I had given a cash advance or driver paid outta pocket were paid. You can call it theft but it was available to him so it’s really on you. Was he pre employment tested? References checked and verified? I bet not. I can only assume when this first started he had to be close enough to the yard for you to get involved and get a hold of the situation. The only way to really handle it is fire that son of ##### on the spot in person. It’s not his place to tell you how it’s gonna be it’s your company. He will follow rules and kick rocks, you coulda got in the truck and finished this load then come back to the yard lesson learned.
More assumptions here but I’m betting you can’t drive or have other obligations which prevent you from doing exactly that. If that’s the case your learning an expensive lesson that I bet you’ll remember.
Not to just beat on anybody this is more for those that see the golden rainbow in trucking and don’t know the king pin from the fifth wheel about it. This is exactly the kind a #### you get into trying to run and learn a business on the fly. In my opinion most of this entire situation was preventable. But the truck has to move so if the applicant says he has done it put him in a truck. If you gotta ask what to do in the no brainer situations or what the rates are etc you need to study more. If your not sure if your a small fleet or an owner operator you have more studying to do. Sorry rant overfordconvert, NightWind, Another Canadian driver and 15 others Thank this. -

Every once in a while I get the bright idea to start adding trucks, threads like this are quick to correct that. Sorry about your luck though op.
of course for all we know, OP could have a rep locally or not paying for (insert any reason here)Last edited: Dec 31, 2022
