@Chinatown - you are a hero, you helped me out when I was a newbie and I see you're still here doing good work. I'll dig into these and see if I can find a good landing spot for him.. and follow up when I do.

    Transmissions don't make truck drivers.

Considering all new trucks are sold as automatics, your "old school" idea that you have to fight a 42 speed transmission in stop and go traffic to prove you're a "truck driver" will be something you can take to your grave.

Have him finish where he started..simple.

Can’t cost all that much for a retest..he’s familiar with their equipment and testing ground so it would be really silly going somewhere else.
Tell him to beg borrow or steal the money if needed.

STOP. Don't encourage the guy to get in to the r ucking. If he does he might as well paint a target on the trailer doors because that's exactly what he's going to be if he sits in the driver's seat.

There no money in trucking. You can count your money but don't fool yourself because your food and other expenses are far greater than if you were home.

The only trucking job that worth a darn is a car hauler.

Be sure to tell them about all those free deadhead miles and the fact that you'll let them sit in a truckstopbfotmr 3 or 4 days while to look for a load for him.

Trucking sucks and so do dishonest trucking companies and lying dispatchers

    @Going Concern --

I like the idea offered in post #13 above (except, of course, the "stealing" part :p).....

After he/she gets that CDL--for a driver who needs a bit more "hand holding" than the average....this carrier offers the most time out with a trainer that I've seen, anywhere in the industry (6 weeks):

Entry Level Drivers | Truck Driving School Graduate | Less Than 6 Months | CDL | Wiley Sanders | Troy, Alabama

With the above carrier--I hope your would-be, could-be driver friend likes Kenworth tractors.

Whatever (else) you do--DO NOT send your friend over to Schneider!!!  o_O

Sorry you've had such horrible experiences in trucking. Bet you also still drive though while telling others not to.
As for free deadhead miles; never experienced that. Have to do due diligence before accepting a trucking job, then won't have all those problems. Sitting in a truck stop 3 or 4 days waiting for a load? I never experienced that because I pulled reefers.

Go join the local credit union and get a personal signature loan for the cost of retesting. Way better terms than indentured servitude, and way cheaper than going back through another training program.

Yes, I’ll take my point of view to the grave. Not 42 speed. 18 is as high as I ever did. I prefer 12 sped manual. A hi and lo reverse and 10 forward gears. Floating gears and hardly ever having to tough the brakes.

There are many things you can do with a manual that you can’t do with an automatic.

NASCAR is 100% manual transmission for good reason.

That's not true (if you're talking about the haulers)
