The way I read it:
You're on the hook for $8k. $100/week is taken off the amount the first year, but they reimburse you $50%. Week 53 sees the remaining $2800 come off the bill, and they reimburse you the $2800 at the same time... so in one year: You pay $5200. Swift gives you $2600 of that. Then on week 53, you pay $2800, they pay you for it. This takes care of the $8k.
Now, in the second year, you get a reimbursement of $50/week... meaning if you stay 2 years (104 weeks total), the remaining $2600 you paid in is returned to you.
Now if you quit before any of these take effect: Weeks 1-52, subtract $100 from $8,000 for each complete week of employment. So week 26 would find you owing $5400 while week 52 would have you owing $2800. Week 53 would have you owing $0... but foregoing the reimbursement of the $2600 you paid in.
That's about as simple as I can break that down.
As for your other concern, it costs a LOT of money to find, recruit, train, and on-board a driver. It is in their best interest to retain the drivers as long as they can, and that's why they structure the payback to where you really want to make it 53 weeks and still have a reason to stay another year. That last $2,600 is a lot less than they will have to invest to find your replacement, as is the initial $5,400. The bigger the carrier, the bigger the advertising and recruiting budget. I would not be surprised to hear of Swift having a $50 million advertising and recruiting budget.

I have a question. My stepson was fired by swift during his cdl training and I'm wondering if we are still liable for his tuition?

Quick question.... My stepson was fired from swift during the training process . Do we still owe for the tuition? Originally they said we owed $8000, since then it has gone to a collection agency and now we owe $11,868 . Is there anyway to fight this amount?

Positive he still owes the money then. What he should do is get a credit card and pay off the debt with that. Then throw the credit card away so he doesn't charge anything else on it. Other drivers do it this way. $11868 is a lot of money for most of us.
Has he found another job yet?
How bad was the wreck, any injuries?
