The NHTSA has been pushing the FMCSA to require speed limiters for years. But when the ATA and the Truckload Carriers groups put their money behind it, the FMCSA caved.
From the time they opened up that comment period, it was already a done deal. It will take at least another year or so to be implemented. But you can take it to the bank, by the end of summer, they will be publishing the final rule.

Me, I'm getting too old for this crap anyway so I will retire again.

It's a shame that there isn't a way to make the motoring public see how this isn't only a trucking issue. But a safety issue that will affect everyone on our roads.

Oh, it will end up like that hair brained plan they had on the 34 hour reset with the 2am to 5am crap. Let to more accidents, so they dumped it. Wonder how many people will have to die from road rage incidents before it happens though. And Im with you on the retirement. Im 66 and really dont need this #### anymore.

The only trucks that need to be governed are the ones that consistently have bad BASICs or employ drivers who receive lots of speeding tickets - both things that can be verified by data. Public opinion and the megas' money should have no bearing whatsoever.

I run 75+ usually the majority of the day/ week. It helps me gain a load or 2 for the week and makes up for possible extra fuel costs by running those speeds, eventhough it wouldn't really make much difference at 65.

Other times I just feel like blowing people's doors off. I like the fact that I can still enjoy that little bit of freedom.

That old rule with the 2am to 5am part on the 34 hour was the best rule they ever made. It limited truck capacity over weekends. Ever since they did away with that rule longer haul Friday loads that needed to be somewhere on Monday got cheap and that's where they'll always be. That rule forced companies to make sure their drivers got a legit weekend off if they wanted a 34 hour reset. Those loads sat on the loading dock over the weekend uncovered when drivers were staying home to get a reset. But drivers whined about it and there it went.

If you think they will remove any speed limiter mandate you're dreaming. That will never happen. kemosabi49 nailed it. It's a farce that ATA says speed limiters are for saftey. There's no evidence for that in fact there is plenty of evidence to the opposite. But it's not about safety. It's just one more of those little things about trucking that the ATA doesn't want their competition running unlimited trucks or without ELD's because most people wouldn't choose to work at a worthless micromanaging fleet given a choice.

Speed limiting vehicles is accidents waiting to happen. And I just read somewhere that the NHTSA wants car manufacturers make the cars so they cannot speed. The GPS systems will automatically slow cars down when coming into a slower speed limit and not let the car exceed that. Total lunacy there

Ok then stop going 65 64 65 64 63 62 63 64 63 64 65 61 60 and maybe these governed trucks will stop trying to pass. ON FLAT ROAD. WHat bothers me the most is when people go 60 for miles and I go a constant 65 (if no hills and not heavy) and i get in left lane and once im halfway pass the idiot im passing realizes his truck all of a sudden can go 66+
