Linux Mint is a perfect starter distro. It kinda has a Winblows 7 feel to it. Lots of distros and info can be found at:

DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

You will need Rufus or Etcher to write the distro to a USB stick, I think Etcher is the easier of the two.

Once the distro is written you can boot from it and try Linux Mint without installing it or changing anything on your PC.

What do you want to do with it, and what are you going to be using it on, Laptop, Desktop etc.

If you just want to surf the web and use sites like this one then any of the distros will work, I personally like Ubunto but there are a few good ones out there.

They are also going to have a Window/Apple look and feel the more you use it, the easier it gets.

I currently have a desktop but may trade it for a laptop with a docking station. I'll mainly be using it for surfing the web and working with spreadsheets. I just think that units would probably give me more control and be more secure, especially since Windows and Apple OSes are coming with so much built-in spyware nowadays.

Any of the Linux distro would work then, they are stream lined and have a free version of excel that works similarly.

The plus is also because they are stream lined you don't need a hardware heavy PC to run it like a lot of Windows machines.

If this is something you like, you may want to poke around this site VMware find a virtual machine that best suits your current needs and you can down load and try any Linux Distro's being talked about.

It will run any OS as an application on your current Windows machine, although you have to meet certain hardware requirements but it would let you install it if it wont work.

Once you find a OS you like you can do the Etcher or likewise install on any machine you want.

Kind of a test drive of the OS before you install permanently

    OpenOffice isn't available anymore.

I can't remember Linuxs version but I haven't been able to find it either.
