I'm a driver not a Mechanic so hope you can help me out.

Specs of 2 potential trucks for project

2016 Peterbilt 587 paccar MX-13 eaton 18sp manual. 750k miles. 27k asking price (my preference is manual but could use an auto too)

    2018 PETERBILT 579, PACCAR MX-13 510 HP, EATON-FULLER FO-18E-313A-MHP AUTO, 1.5 million miles RATIO 3:21 27$ asking price too

I think one of the rears Is a 2.8 on a 579 too, everything else the same as above. I'm gonna be hauling flatbed dono what ratio is better?

Also there is a 2016 579 same specs about 2 million miles for 22k$

Can I take this truck and swap the engine for a pre egr detriot 60 series 500hp 12.7L. Would it be compatible with either transmission?

With the trucks over 1.5 miles would I need to redo the rear ratios?

Just wondering what the mechanics thoughts are about making these changes and the cost to do it.

I found a company kustom trucks that seems to sell the engine mounts needed. Kustom Truck

Also how long do the transmissions last is a 2 million mile truck due for a new transmission or can they go further, I heard one person say 5 million

Thanks for any help! For the 22k or 27k truck after buying the detroit and labor costs how much money would I need to burn to get it running reliably.

You can do anything. Is it legal? According to the EPA, no. Engines are what is subject to EPA regulations, but once an engine has been installed in the truck, you can not legally change it to an engine that has an earlier standard of emissions controls.

They changed the regs under Obama, and tried to roll them back under Trump, and now even gliders are affected by current tier standards.

You could however substitute an eld exempt engine for one that requires an eld if they are the same tier (EPA 98). If you have a 2004 that had a 2002 MY engine, you could switch to a pre-2000 12.7.

Usually the wiring harness for the engine is a problem.

Interesting. I saw about the new glider kits being banned or limiting companies to selling only 300 units per year or something. But I did not know about the rule about putting a pre egr in a truck that is newer than 2004, bummer.

How do people get away with deleting the epa part of the engines, technically that's not legal too I presume?

Is it that the epa may not approve but DOT won't enforce it except in CA of course?

If DOT doesn't enforce this how could the epa stick something up where it doesn't belong?

Would this be needed to wire in the engine?

Ooo could I make it look like a 2018 or 2016 glider kit that always had the detriot in it which is from years when gliders were legal ‍

You can repin the existing harness and save some $$
Those adapter harness are kinda pricy and your gonna wait a fair amount of time to get one

It's not legal what you are trying to do. The same as cutting out DEF is not legal, but still thousands of people do it every day and barely anybody gets caught.
Even if you do decide to go with this project, you are choosing tired horses to do that. By the time everything is set and done, you will be looking at close to $100k, for that money might as well buy an already restored 99 truck and not deal with all the headaches of that Frankenstein project

Just a driver here, but no way would I would waste time or money on that. Pure waste IMO.

    Can you do it? Absolutely
Cost? Doesn't matter, not worth it
