Wish I could say the samething. My Dad was a 25 year Retired WW2 Navy Vet. When he passed away they only did the Flag since they did not have anyone to do the gun salute. I was very disappointed but did not know much of anything at age 15. I will never forget the moment when I got the flag though.

Dad and Uncle was same way. Was both in WW2 and been in crazy situations in Navy during that time. Both were very young, Dad did 25 years in it and retired. When they got together they would drink like Fish and never get drunk and talk about the war. I always set and listened to them but Dad never told much stories over the years unless in that setting.

Dad flew PBYs for the Navy. That was in the days before helicopters. When they were invading the islands in the Pacific the PBYs would go in, unarmed and under fire, to pick up downed pilots and people from sinking ships. Dad said that sometimes they'd have so many survivors on board that the plane wouldn't fly and they'd just taxi as fast as sea conditions allowed to someplace safe to unload and go back for more.
Both uncles flew bombers in Europe. One flew B-17s, the other flew B-24s. If you ever want to read something truly chilling read about the raids they flew from England into Germany. The casualty rates were appalling.

My dad was a US Navy Corpsman in WW2 he was trained as a dental technician than ended up hitting the beaches in the pacific with the Marines from island to island and this part of the war he never talked about. He did finally get to be a Dental Technician after the A-bombs was dropped. A decision was made that the men heading back to the states would have to wait and get their teeth cleaned stateside. So, he would clean guys teeth for beer rations. He made a deal with the morgue operator, to store the cold beer in the refrigeration units and he was the only guy selling cold beer on base that had thousands of guys cycling through every few days this and being a really good poker player with an eidetic memory he came home with a sizeable bank roll to buy a few bars in New Orleans.
