I believe a single coil rack has a WLL of 10k lbs according to mytee.
Me personally if hauling a single 45k coil would just use 5 coil racks and 3 friction belting. It’s not like it takes any extra time or effort really.

You have to say, "if this lumber breaks, will it move"? More is better on coil racks.
But that coil in the picture was loaded crooked, it didn't slide over. -
Packages range so much there is no one answer. I'd say 20k or above needs 3 suicide.
A 20k shotgun, need 4 to start. Go up accordingly. Chances are, shotgun will set between rails. More the better. Shotgun coils are hard on trailers without purpose built coil wells.Nostalgic, cke, CAXPT and 1 other person Thank this. -
I tend to go way beyond the minimum. Just the way I tend to do things.IH Truck Guy, cke, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -

Looking at both sets of pictures, the one big thing that stands out to me, is the short lumber. Always used 72 inch “short boards” that way you have a bit more lumber outside the coil. Most coils that I was hauling were 60 inches or less.

Truth is, my chains are 3/8, so 6000 lbs WWL. So what ever the chains were, just did everything the same.Last edited: May 15, 2023

I'm opposite. I carry a ton of 4' timbers, some 5-6' and only a few 8'. The longer lumber does nothing outside of the coil, if it is shored to the frame rails. Plus you trip over the extra long lumber in the dark. But, I understand guys who haul them once in awhile, mostly only have 8' timbers. -
When I was running a lot of coils and other metals, I had 2 trailers. Both open decks. I actually washed, etched and then epoxy painted markings for CL, and other dimensions on the trailer. Made setup a simple task, just line it up with the markings. Places that had cameras on the crane seemed to really like it as well. -
I'm happy ti
Now, I know my way of "anti skid material" isn't under the racks. Probably never will be. But those are comfortable for 30k each. Simple.
