I was driving for my old boss back then pulling flatbed. I think we were running 13 or 14 trucks then. We had an 8 month stretch where every day during the week (M-F) at least one truck was sitting somewhere out on the road without a load. My worst week was delivered Seattle early in the week and didn’t reload out until Friday.

Still have dopes on YouTube raving about having a good week in such hard times. Why? Why would you discuss what you are earning in a competitive field, when times are good OR bad? Just keep your mouth shut and do your job. When you go around blabbing it to everybody it's no wonder why they're are too many trucks out here. It was bad. Low point was $3400 week, dry Van. Almost half spent on fuel. Lucky to make $2000 after fuel. It slowly got better. Little bit at a time. .10 cpm. Shop Labor rates fell back under $100 per hr. Dealerships also cut back on hours. Like in 2000, no more 24 hr. Freightliner Dealers. Trucks were cheap. Auctions full. 2-3 yr old Trucks selling for 50% of equivalent new models. Everything depended on whether someone was over leveraged, or had cash. Credit was frozen. Cash was king. I could have bought a brand new dry van in 2009 for $19,999. It sat for months with a huge sign on it outside the Dealership. Cash only, or own credit source. Dealer couldn’t help get credit.

I haven't gone out west in a very long time.
    It's flatbed black hole.
Never any good paying loads, finding $2 a mile to Boston from out west is like hitting the lotto.

People call still and often $2 something a mile to go to Utah or Washington etc, I say why would I do that and come back for what a $1.30? Runs like that are to the path of bankruptcy.

Last two times I went west was to Idaho and Denver. Both times I couldn't get any load at any rate going east and I ended up deadheading east. I got over $5+ a mile going in so it wasn't that painful but still not worth it.

Nostalgic, Rideandrepair and Siinman Thank this.
