We just purchased an 06 truck with a 475hp MXS acert in it. This truck has a little over 500K miles on it and has an 1850# drive line. I have been doing a lot of reading on the different mods that can be done on these motors to "free them up" so to speak. There is a wealth of knowledge on these forums but it can be somewhat confusing also. I was hoping that one or some of you that have dealt with these motors could offer some advice on where to start upgrading the hp/mpg's. Would it be better to have Cat rerate it to a 550 or purchase a tuned ecm/programmer? We are going to check the mufflers and/or put straights on it. I've read about different fuel filters and filter heads? Some say get the fuel temp wire but not the boost wire and some say get both?
We are just trying to put a plan together and to get started without going in the wrong direction. I've read through pages and pages on this site and others while trying to jot down bits and pieces.

    Thanks,
    mbt

For a basically stock over the road motor you would be best to start with this list.

    1. Replace factory muffler(s) with aftermarket high flow unit(s)

    2. Keep the air filters serviced and free flowing

    3. Make sure the fuel filters and bases flow enough and no air in the system. If you want to run the stock primary filter bases go with a Fleetguard FS1023. This is a all stainless water seperator that can be drained. For the seconday run a CAT 1R-0749 (best filtration and great flow). For the ultimate setup, I would go with a Davco or FASS unit to replace the primary filter. Also make sure the fuel PSI is uo around 100. To many times the stock pressure is down around 80-85 PSI and this causes many problems that people over look.

    4. Run a fuel temp wire. This mod alone is very very cheap and will give great results (about 40-50 HP alone). The boost wire is a bad idea. The boost wire will increase soot in the oil and will cause higher fuel consumption at idle and excessive smoke.

    5. A tuned ECM or downloader is the best way to go for tuning. Having CAT re-rate the motor is pretty much a waste of money considering you are pretty much left with endless possibilities with aftermarket tuning. The Bully Dog is the best option if you are wanting more than 2 tunes for different situtation (like normal driving and then sled pull/dyno runs). But the PDI units are really affordable if you only want 1 tune for all things.

Basically it comes down to what kinda of motor you want when you are done. Building a great motor is very easy now-a-days, but you need a end plan on what you want. Share a little more info on what you want when in a finished motor and we can help you even more.

I agree with pulling trucker for the most part, the only other "free" upgrade is you can run the actuators "backed off" which will be free hp.

Where I slightly disagree is the rerate, yes ultimately a bully dog or pdi setup is great. But a factory rerate is only $500 and if you get myself, Mr.Haney or DDS to do it , You can get good fuel #'s and a "better" flash file in the form of a Brakesaver/heavy haul file. No its no where in the same league as the bully dog or pdi so far as performance...but its not in the same league price wise either.

I have flashed several to the 625/2050 tq file with good success. But only if the Mufflers and filters are done.

    Thanks

    PullingTrucker,
The mufflers are first on the list. We will probably go with the FASS unit. As for the fuel temp wire, I will be ordering one today. Now to the ECM, I like the idea of the BD Tuner being able to remove the tune if I would need to.
As far as what I want out of this motor, 1. I want all of these upgrades to be positive to my bottom line, not just doing this cause I want X amount of HP. However, having say 700+ Hp would be real nice. 2. I'm just after a great running/pulling motor.

    ROBSREDFORD,
I can't PM you so, what kind of turn around time would it take for you to reflash it to a 625/2050 tq? What would this cost? Should I keep my stock ecm and just buy another to reflash?

    Thanks for the help,
    mbt

Don't waste your money. All the fuel temp wire is, is a 150ohm resistor. You can get 5 of them from Radio Shack for under $2.00. Takes longer to open the hood than it does to install. That's all the one's you buy online are, they just have $6.00 worth of connectors on them and a huge markup.

Jfaulk is right about the fuel temp wire. Guys have been making and over charging for this for a long time. For the best overall results you need to get the timing back into the ACERT motor. The Austrialian CAT files (along with the brakesaver file) have a little more timing than the normal CAT ACERT files. These will help, but not near as much as a tuned ECM or Bully Dog. I'm not putting down what ROBSREDFORD is doing cause his tuning does help, but for a little more money you can get all the benefits you are looking for. As for backing off the actuators...I have heard of many guys doing this, but I haven't so far. I trust Rob, so I would have to say this is safe and helpful.

The last thing I forgot to mention is running high quality oil and a bypass filtration unit. These 2 will take care of many problems with soot clogging the IVA (intake valve actuators) and will save the engine lots of wear.

How much do u back the actuators off? A turn or two or a certain gauged amount. And what will this actually do? thx

Let say, I bought 150 ohm resistor, how should I connect to the wire connectors? How to put things together, before I can use it?

unplug the harness from the sensor on the top of the engine mounted fuel filter head. Shove each end of the resistor in the holes in the plug on the wire harness and tape it up. (I fold the wires of the resistor over to make them larger so it fits tighter) All your doing is connecting the 2 wires that normally went through the temp sensor. Also a good idea to tape off the top of the sensor, since it's facing up it can/will collect dirt and water.

I can take a pic if you need one. It's so simple it shouldn't work, but it does.:biggrin_2559:

    Jfaulk99,
This is is for the acert motor, correct? This will work on my MXS? This sounds almost to easy.
