Hello y'all, I signed up because I have a simple question. Years ago I gave commercial truck driving a shot. I did a CDL training thing, and out on the road I went. It was fun, but it wasn't a job for me. So recently my niece did CDL school, and she ended up getting fired for an account she has. Storey gos, she parked and forgot to set her parking break, the truck rolled back and totalled a car. So, in my very limited experience, this story smells like the bathroom at a flying J truckers lounge bathroom. I remember very early on on training, breaks, breaks, breaks always setting out parking breaks. She also said the company fired her, and made her pay $6,000 bucks to cover damages, and keep the accident off her DAC report. Am I justified in not Bel this story? Thanks in advance for any reply and y'all have a safe and happy 4th, and thank to all you driving on the Holliday and in general!

Many new drivers make dumb mistakes. Also, MOST people, don't easily accept responsibility for their actions and the consequences it brings to them. IMO, most new CDL drivers are not very concerned at all about being careful. I don't know if that applies to your niece or not. I don't know if you have enough interaction with her to conclude she might have been that careless or if it's 100% not in her character to be careless like that. Either way, what are you supposed to do about her accident and getting fired? I would think about that event as "maybe she did and maybe she didn't do that." If she has character and takes responsibility for her actions that suggests one thing about her character but if she has little but a long string of how other people failed to do what they are supposed to do I would conclude "she had an accident, got fired, and learned little from the event," I've made more mistakes than most people and I have tried very hard to learn from them. IMO, younger people these days don't take responsibility for anything and they seldom if ever recognize anyone has the authority to set rules, demand behaviors, set policy. Some people these days think they are AT LEAST a 50/50 partner in every decision and want us to know their opinion is what really matters in almost every situation. I can't tell if your niece is that way or not. I hope not. You cannot care more about her future than she does.

Well, she wouldn't be the first one to forget to set her brakes, but the rest of it sounds like BS

For me, I just COULD NOT stay awake. It's a rough job, you don't just go do it, I don't care what training you have. You can do it, or not. The only reason I ask, is because the money will be a loan.

I always forgot to "get out and look" when bumping docks. But I never forgot my breaks, or making sure they were 100%. Our trainer drilled that into us. Meh. Thanks for the comment though. She is at another company now so we will see soon enough I guess.

Even then, can you pay to have accidents removed from the DAC? That's not what I was told when I did it.

someone is trying to scam either you or her. As I understand it, once they report it to their insurance, it has to be charged to a driver. What they're wanting to do is not report it to their insurance. That's tough titty. That's the reason they have insurance. Tell her to take the hit and move on. A simple backing accident in a parking lot won't exclude her from most jobs. The company is just trying to cover their behinds, that's all.

What is her plan to repay the $6k? I would NOT loan money to someone unless I had all the confidence in the world they are honest, the money will be used responsibly and they have a clear way to pay the money back. I'm Scottish. I grew up poor. It's not my job to bail you out, it's your job to convince me why giving you money is a great idea. Was she always responsible and hardworking in the past? What kind of work will she get now? I'd be more inclined to loan her half if she comes up with the other half by selling some stuff or something like that before I supply my half to the deal. That way you see how serious she is before you are out the money you loan. Trucking companies will usually accept weekly or monthly payment for debts. She made the mistake, let her figure out how to live with it. She will likely hate you for got giving her the money or hate you when she DOESN'T repay the money because she has some excuse.

Once she gets out of the debt how much incentive does she have to find work? Is this the first time she has asked someone to bail her out of a problem? If it isn't I would NOT even consider it. I've never seen a spoiled and pampered person turn their life around, they just keep spiraling out of control and biting the people they asked for help.

I never heard of paying to keep something off DAC. I retired in Oct 2021 after 28 years of driving.
