I hate this job. It's nothing against Swift, but OTR is not for me. Should I give them a two week notice? I have heard that you will not get any miles if they know you are quitting. I also don't want to go out for another two weeks.
should I give notice

If you haven't quit yet, good. What you do over the next few weeks will be so important!
Yes, give 2 weeks notice. Make sure you don't quit under a load, abandon equiptment, or anything stupid.
It may actually take LONGER than 2 weeks to get CLEANLY out the door. It could really suck for the next few weeks, but trust me, that's the way to do it. Make sure you finish up your last load somewhere near where you are going to turn in the truck. CYA!
Go out of your way to leave correctly!cherokee96red and AnnHouse Thank this. -
Are you sure you can't hold on two more weeks? Always better to not burn an bridges even if you are convinced now that you'll never set foot in a another truck again you never know what the future has planned for you. Why don't you call them and see if they'll mind you quiting today or meet them halfway and give one weeks notice. Just some food for thought.

The real question is do you have something else lined up? I've made the mistake in the past of quitting without notice and reassuring myself I'd have another job in a day or so, well 2 weeks later without an offer I was kicking myself in the butt. This economy sucks, especially if you don't have much experience, I know being gone sucks too but it's a paycheck right now and in reality it's not the end of the world.

Okay you don't like OTR, have you looked into another fleet? Also....it'll be harder to find another job if you just walk out without notice.
Seriously........there are fleets that are NOT OTR. -
Yes there is fleets that are not OTR with Swift but you have to be an owner op for them. Also have to live in Arizona ,ca or NV! You can be a company driver in the container fleet. The fall out rate is huge though. Most people cant control their frustration when learning the fleet. IMHO always quit the right way. Be nice send it through the Qualcom, take photos of your messages and theirs. Make sure you do it when you are not assigned a load. Or they will get you for load abandonment most likely. Im sorry to hear your having a hard time. If you are brand new to trucking it takes awhile to get use to being gone. Learning how to control your mind from dwelling on negative what ifs and focusing on the positive. That being you have a job. Good luck to you and God bless.
AnnHouse Thanks this. -
Bulldog,I realize you're new to the forum. However, I happen to work for Swift. I happen to be a company driver. I happen to be on a fleet that has non OTR company drivers. And I happen to know there are non OTR fleets with company drivers in other states than AZ, CA, NV. I also happen to know that a number of the fleets would rather NOT have O/Os.
Toostroked: what area are you in? If you're in my area I'll try to help you get on our fleet if you wish. -
Cool! I only know what Ive been told and what Ive been exsposed to with the company. If there is other fleets for him than that is awesome. Good to know. P.S I work for them also! The popular opinion in the company is they are trying to go to 75% O/O in the company. ITs easier on them and you as an owner op have all the responsability. It breaks, you pay, fuel you pay. Some fleets dont want owner ops because there bottom line gets affected! Or they cant pay what it takes to keep them afloat. We could go back and forth on this for days but the bottom line is helping a fellow driver! Being new to the forum has has nothing to do with the validity of my comment previously!Last edited: Mar 7, 2010
