I was one of the lucky ones with my mentor.
He had his quirks and it was a challenge sharing that little space with him, but we ended up being friends.
Not a slob or a pervert or an addict, but he was truly mentor minded in his devotion to training students well.
Most are not of his caliber.
It is not a job I could do nearly as well, and I like being alone with no one around me.tscottme, hope not dumb twucker, 201 and 2 others Thank this. -

I wonder if some trainees have unrealistic expectations. For me, this was a purely transactional relationship. He had me on the truck because he got paid to do it (if he genuinely likes teaching, or feels it's part of his duty as an experienced driver to train others, that's great but not necessary). I was on his truck to learn the job. I needed to observe what he was doing, respectfully ask questions about what he's doing and why, and give my best effort. I didn't care if he's a bitter, foul-mouthed jerk, or likes to spout disgusting social or political views, or is a slob, or anything else. That's irrelevant. He had what I want - a successful driving career. So I can learn from him, and I #### well made sure I did. If you fail to benefit from time with an experienced driver, that's mostly on you. Sure' we'd all love to have a wise, inspiring mentor. But if that's not who you end up with, you still need to figure out a way to make it a productive experience.

I'm sorry, but if you want to get into this business "cold quarter", these are the hoops one must go through. Just the fact someone has to "learn" how to drive a truck, I feel, is a poor idea in the first place.tscottme Thanks this. -
