So, I just graduated CDL school and passed my test. Got a lead on a job from the trucking school director. I called on it, spoke with the owner of the 4 truck fleet. He wants to pay me 1099 as an independent contractor while driving one of his 4 tractors hauling a refer.
What things do I need to look out for or ask about? How is pay figured for OTR 1099 gigs where I am driving someone else’s rig? I’m needing info as I am meeting with this gentleman on Monday.
Please advise & thank you.

Your really an employee w-2 if your driving their truck. Most of the time 1099 are not good signs for the driver because you have to pay all the taxes yourself and no health insurance and no workers comp insurance if you get hurt on the job. Their was some guy on here couple weeks ago as 1099 his boss booked some load on his truck and driver couldn’t make the pickup and his boss said we was going to charge him for load he couldn’t pickup basically blaming the driver he was saying it was $6,000 load. Their are lot of bad stories on here about 1099 drivers.
who is going to pay for truck repairs? What if the 1099 driver damage the truck or tire need replaced. Lot of the 1099 companies want to charge the 1099 driver claiming it you fault. They usually like 1099 drive to make seem like they pay more plus they are so small like 4 trucks they don’t have the money for truck repairs when needed. What if they just refuse to pay you? All you can do it sue them and maybe turn them into labor board as miss classified you.dwells40, lual, Loudstacks and 3 others Thank this. -
@Moose1958 is another that is a stickler for details and backs it up with facts. -
Run far, far away from that job... is probably the only advice you are likely to hear here.

The best way to think of 1099 vs W2 is business vs employee. If you have the financial means and business skills to run a business and the company is paying you enough to make the numbers work then great, go for it. If the company is simply trying to skirt expenses like accidents, repairs, insurance, etc, then run away fast.
Bean Jr. Thanks this.
