You do realize almost everything is made from oil in it or by used by it? Just stating we will have a place for oil for many many years to come.
(Over 99% of plastic is made from chemicals sourced from fossil fuels, and the fossil fuel and plastic industries are deeply connected. Indeed, the shale gas boom in the United States is fueling a massive build-out of plastic infrastructure in the US and beyond.)

People talk about EVs as a way to totally stop using oil. But so many parts of these EVS are manufactured from materials that were made from oil. From tires to wire insulation, to battery casings to plastic interior and exterior panels. And more.
The Petro-Chemical industry is huge and the Petro part of it isn't going away anytime soon.Vampire, High Stepper, Magoo1968 and 3 others Thank this. -
People keep talking about production but what does that have to do with usage? THAT'S where the oil disappears. Production is meaningless.

The electric grid is not able to handle an increase in demand. They are trying to get rid of natural gas in some cities, yet don’t have the capacity, nor the infrastructure to support what they want to do by electrifying buildings and vehicles.
The interference by politicians with power generation has wasted so much capital. Many power producers had to switch fuel or even shut down when they started going after coal. Meanwhile, the market produced emissions technology to make a coal fired power plant produce emissions on par with that of a natural gas fired plant.
Nothing is changing, as they’re now going after the oil industry and making things extremely difficult. When you have someone promising to end oil, entrepreneurs and investors won’t run out to get into the oil industry. The same can be said for if a politician promised to end laundromats. Does anyone think they’d get investor capital to open a laundromat?
As for prices of fuel and everything else. One income used to run a household with multiple children.
Monetary inflation leads to price inflation. You can still purchase fuel for a quarter. Before they debased coinage and robbed people of their money and monetary freedom (in 1913, then in 1933), one barber quarter or pre 65’ Washington quarter contained 6.25 grams of silver.
6.25 grams of silver = $4.50
4 quarters/dollar = $18
If paid in sound money:
Salary of $3,500/year = $63,000
$5,000/year = $90,000
$7,500/year = $135,000
Your income of say $100,000/year = $1,800,000JoeyJunk Thanks this. -

- "No one knows how much, if at all, CO2 emissions will decline as EV use rises. Every claim for EVs reducing emissions is a rough estimate or an outright guess based on averages, approximations,
or aspirations." That's true. It's also true that I didn't KNOW what my utility savings would be when I replaced my 1960's boiler, but even at the low estimates my gas bill would have gone down. The real upside was my insurance costs and exposure to a cataclysmic failure would plummet. Turns out the cost savings over 5 years are paying to replace the 1960's single pane windows next month.
- "No one knows when or whether EVs will reach economic parity with the cars that most people drive." No one knew when solar and wind would reach economic parity either, but they have. If we ended ALL government subsidies for energy production, wind and solar would be able to hold their own against fossil fuels. An uncertain outcome is no reason not to try.
- Mineral extraction is problematic? Yep, so is oil extraction.
- Supply chains aren't figured in on EV emissions? Are the figured in for ICEs? Nope.
- EVs aren't being adopted like the minivan? No, but they are being adopted faster than the ICE at the turn of the 20th century.
