it'll be based off miles driven per year, and each year, one will have to ge and get the odometer read.
no escaping the road use taxes.
and another way of paying road use taxes is this:
Without a Gas Tax, How Will EVs Be Charged for Road Use? - Consumer Reports -

does it matter where you drive and pay your gas taxes?
you're gonna need to recharge in nearly every state you drive in, so BAM...you are taxed at least on the federal tax level?
now mind you, i am only speaking of 4 wheelers..
God only knows what's gonna happen for class A, and B things.
so again, a yearly tax on your miles driven, overall......i don't think they are gonna start sifting thru where you go.
hey, "they" wanna push the all electric agenda..???
let them figure all that out..........which they won't........ -
The state I live in collects most of my gas taxes but does not collect all of my gas taxes as I do by gas in other states.
Sure, the Federal gas tax is the same in all states. -
tarmadilo Thanks this.

Oregon has been trying to figure out miles use tax on the citizenry for a few years. Not sure if they ever got anything through the process.
They ran into an issue with the large number of people that live in WA because no State income tax, and commute to Oregon for Employment (better employment laws) and shopping (no sales tax).buddyd157 Thanks this. -
With the 60000 mile break even Point between a Tesla and an equivalent gas car it’ll be a while before I go EV. I’m currently rocking a KIA soul so the break even of a Tesla is in the 200k range.
It’s a Novel idea but if you run out of juice it’s a tow fee to a charger. I also live in the middle of nowhere so travel to Salt Lake City or Portland requires at least one 4 hour stop to recharge each way. That and it’d cost me $10,000 to have another power line ran to the house to operate the 60A charger. -
Rapid chargers can recharge from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes -- that last 20% is slow charging.
May want to check this out:
Electric Vehicle Charging | Charging Stations | Hyundai USA
At the bottom of the page is a charger location map.
Beyond that I think you are correct, at this time an EV is not a good choice for you.
I would encourage you to look beyond Tesla, they are quickly falling behind the tech curve. May want to look at the KIA EV6 or it's sister Hyundai Ioniq 5 (same platform). Still don't think they will meet your needs but they are, in my opinion, a better comparison model than the outdated Teslas. The Soul EV is getting decent reviews also.
The Toyota and Subaru joint developed car (should be available soon) also may be worth a glance.
One of the things I came across in my research was they could run a jump charger between 2 cars to get a drained car to a charge station. I expect AAA and other tow services to start slapping battery packs on tow trucks so they can offer jump services.Saltyoldone and gentleroger Thank this. -
but for some of us, by 2035, the target date for the last of the gasoline cars, if we buy a gasoline car by that date..??
and at our ages..??
we won't be buying any more cars, much longer,. cuz many of us will be in nursing homes, or assisted living homes, or in a 6 foot long box, 6 feet under ground...
