    Hi guys! Where to start...

2 1/2 years ago I had a friend outside the US contact me and say that he was having trouble purchasing products from US based companies that didn't want to ship outside the US. He asked me if he could ship to me and then I ship to him and he would cover the shipping cost as well as pay me compensation for shipping to him. All went well for many years until one day the police raided my house drug bust style and I was charged with a 2nd degree felony for theft (Because what he shipped me exceeded $750 in the state of Washington). I'm 27 years old and I've never been in trouble for anything but because I had been shipping for this guy for years, I was afraid they would go after me for everything else I had shipped as well. So I took a plea deal for the felony so I'd only be charged one thing that was shipped to me. The prosecutor refused to budge on the felony and risking a trial and a worse fate wasn't worth it. I do no jail time but have to wait 5 years to get the felony expunged.

So what do I do now? I figured being a trucker and doing some traveling would be a great distraction from this mess and be a fun career. I am not currently employed and can't afford CDL school (my local CDL school quoted me $5,000). I would love to do OTR No touch freight and don't mind a contract. I have no kids or anything tying me to wear I am now and I'm ready to jump into my future with trucking.

Problem is, after explaining my felony situation to Werner and a few other companies, they told me they aren't interested in hiring me as a felon which kinda crushed my hopes.

I've filled out so many forms and sent so many emails and it just seems like I'm getting absolutely nowhere. Does anyone know of a good reputable trucking company that would hire a class C theft felon and pay for his CDL training with a contract?

I won't even bother asking....but apparently whatever you guys were shipping was pretty "hot" stuff....

You need to know (in case you didn't, already) -- the overall freight market right now is in a pretty bad slump (and freight rates are, too). :(

As a result -- carriers have tightened up their hiring requirements. Your search for a beginning carrier will be MUCH HARDER than otherwise, under more "normal" conditions.

It makes no sense (at this point, anyway) to go to a CDL school, regardless of how reputable it may be -- if you can't score a job...afterwards.

So....in your case, you really ought to talk to some recruiters, first -- before you invest any time, money....or effort elsewhere.

If you haven't already -- talk to Western Express. They are known for being a "2nd chance" carrier:

Western Express -- takes beginning drivers -- flatbed, or dry van duty

The following list shows companies that will hire felons...based on different time frames...one of the lists shown is on a case-by-case basis:

Trucking Companies That Hire Felons In 2022

Note that a few of the companies listed are now out of business (like Celadon).

Wouldn't everybody like a starter job like that! Yeah, not gonna happen. 'Second chance' companies always get a lot of floor loads....

    I'm confused.
    How is that considered theft?

There's more to this, and the OP is pretty much F'd for quite awhile.

Wouldn't that only apply to goods that were stolen originally?
I guess that could be the case.

As someone with a felony conviction for "theft", let me explain your issues, and there's multiple:

    1. Your theft felony is technically probably "Theft by receiving" or some variation of that charge, in some ways that's almost worst than straight up theft, that means you helped in the commission of the theft. That sets off warning bells to most companies as to your level of "trust" and "security". One thing they would look at with that, since you helped someone engage in theft, what if you were hauling a high value load, and you "inadvertently" told a friend on the phone what you were hauling, next thing you know, middle of the night, your trailer gets broken into and things go missing, you are once again an accomplice.

    2. Yellow freight went out of business, that dumped 22,000 drivers into the wading pool, all with exp., admittedly many of them are going to be trying to find another Union job, which simply isn't going to happen, and those that don't, are going to take whatever decent position they can find.

    3. Every week, nationally, a couple thousand "fresh meat" graduate CDL school, the majority of whom have a clean record (CDL schools are getting to be more of a stickler about criminal records), those drivers are more appealing to fleets than someone with a record.

    4. The list @lual posted is a place to start, but here's the issue, and Werner is a perfect example of this, go back to items 1, 2 and 3 for why Werner is saying no. When I graduated CDL school in '97, my felony was 5 yrs old, Werner was willing to hire me from the start, but my family situation was such that I couldn't go OTR at the time.

If I were you, I'd talk to local P&D companies or local delivery companies looking for a driver helper, but in all honesty, until your felony is 5 yrs old, it's going to be difficult. Also, with a theft conviction, getting your TWIC card is going to be extremely difficult until it's at least 10 yr old.

Someone else stole the goods, then gave them to him to ship to the final destination, that would make it theft by receiving, he received the goods from the person who stole them.
