When is Working Overtime Not Worth it Financially? - Rinkydoo Finance -
I'm working today right? The cut time is 11am. I had to go to the dock, find the supervisor and make them close it. It's 1050am, and suddenly they wanna start loading more onto the trailer. Very frustrating because they could've loaded those 6 skids 2 hours ago.
The cut time here is just that... A time they say. There's no real sense of urgency at times and it just extends your work day.mpow66m, Gearjammin' Penguin, Siinman and 2 others Thank this. -
Cut time. They wanna throw two more skids on at the last moment, making your day longer. Show them what cut time really is. Granted may go to jail but it’ll make people think don’t do that.

It is a completely irrational argument to make that overtime would ever be a financial detriment. Overtime results in a higher rate of pay and more quantity of hours worked for that pay rate. Because a higher rate and more hours is a mathematical win, it's not rational to think it's not a financial improvement.
With that, the taxes that your employer withholds is based on the W-4 that you last filled out. Some folks never change their W-4 for years, although they'll get raises, change positions, work more overtime etc. Most folks completed that W-4 looking at exemptions as counting one for a dependent, one for a spouse etc. because someone told them to do so years ago and they never questioned it.
What you SHOULD be doing is figuring out a very educated guess of where your total, all-in income will land at the end of the year and adjusting the W-4 accordingly. You should re-evaluate this every time you get a new bid, you get forced on a lot of o/t you didn't think of etc. (think MONTHS not days) AND on top of that, you should be doing this while including your spouses income (assuming you file jointly) into your calculations.
The end result is you'll give the government a much smaller interest free loan, and the O/T bend-over fest won't sting like it used to, because you are baking that into a whole year's worth of tax withholdings.Siinman, Albertaflatbed, LtlAnonymous and 3 others Thank this. -
