I'm not a Forum expert at residency methods in adjacent/other states.

Other Forum members should chime in before long, with suggestions on that topic.

I'm also really baffled by the whole CDL Mill thing that a recruiter at FreyMiller was telling me. Is there any truth to that?

    Thanks again L

It can't be that all the bonehead truckers are from Florida. :D well there are a lot of bad drivers here.. if so kind of sucks because they're ruining it for all us good common sense drivers. I figure I just got to sell myself to a company to prove them I'm a worthy driver.

I would recommend that you choose a CDL school that is:

    • a preferred CDL school by a carrier that you would like to join (as a rookie)
    • a school that will train you & also give you a final exam on a tractor with a MANUAL TRANSMISSION. That way -- you won't have an automatic transmission restriction on your CDL.

Note: Contrary to what you may be thinking -- generally speaking, CDL schools only teach you just enough to get a CDL.

THEY DO NOT REALLY TEACH YOU HOW TO REALLY DRIVE A BIG RIG.

For that -- you need to pick a starter carrier that specializes in teaching new drivers how to REALLY DRIVE a big rig.

Your primary objective as a new CDL holder -- learn how to drive a big rig -- & on a professional level.

Already enrolled in the manual transmission 4-week course at Suncoast trucking academy. Also just obtain my CDL class a permit with air brakes and combination
I do believe they have some companies that hire people from there.

    Perhaps.

Given the current freight environment -- many of those carriers may have stopped or sharply curtailed hiring out of Florida altogether -- & especially in FL below I-4. :(

I'm down with learning with a trainer and a company after the 4 week program it's just I hope I can get hired... And I hope it's not longer than 2 months because I can't afford to board my dog for longer. PS
Please don't suggest the idea of getting rid of the dog. That dog saved my life and I saved her life. :)

Guess I'll have to work locally until I can save up enough money to move.

Still doesn't make sense. It's not like I want to go home to South Florida when I go out on the road. So they're discriminating against South Floridians?
