I can tell you I never took it again. I did a lot of 550 north afterward, but then switched over to 491 to 191 to 6 going up to Oregon. I learned my lesson. :)

I 've been to some of the "worst" roads sections...Monteagle, Cabbage etc, but nothing scared me like 550 south from Ouray. :)

What is this route like? I know it was already popular with cattle trucks but I've never ran it and it looks like I'm going in November.

Need to be a little more specific about the route you’re asking about.

Nothing really to be concerned about on that route. Mostly 2 lane. Limited fuel and parking choices. 3 scales. Lots of traffic in some places.

Good running. I usually run it in winter as an alternative to 80. Watch for elk around Dove Creek area in winter. Cortez to Monticello can get slick. Never had any issues, just FYI. Colorado is quick to throw up the chain law west of Cortez, even on good road.

Get's slick also coming outta Helper towards Soldier Summit, and can get plum dangerous if your headed over the mountain towards Duchesne. If it's snowing on the mountain between Helper and Duchesne, i like going over the mountain before 5 am. After that, very likely you'll get stuck on the mountain because somebody spins out, even with chains.

I mean considering the general region it's about as nice as it gets. You can run pretty wide open but you've got the occasional slow down in the speed limit. There's like one actual downhill somewhere in Utah other than that it doesn't really present any sort of challenge other than maybe in winter and even rarely then.

And at least those roads are in better than shape than some of the Arizona ones in that region.

Although that does depend if you're going to run six all the way into the salt lake area then well that one is quite twisty and quite hilly I was forgetting 6 lol. But it's not really that bad. Except maybe in winter on occasion and it's usually in better shape than a lot of the other passes.

I used to run that combo from Laredo to Portland all the time back in the day.

    It's pretty easy peasy.

Just kick back enjoy the scenery and well you're going to figure out that there's only a few good places to get any food along the way so maybe pack a lunch.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I'll be running it in mid November heading to Provo or SLC. Not sure yet where the hotel will be. That's the shortest route.

FerrissWheel, cke and CAXPT Thank this.

Just curious if Chad has you running with the XL trailers too or not? (If you know who that is of course, I might be mistaken you for someone else)
