If you relocate in six months, you'll also have a driver's license for six months. Things are looking up for you!

Go get a driver's license, then a cdl, the license in this state is easy, especially if you had one in another country and it is still valid.

    To the OP,

I would look at community college CDL schools. They are the ones that are going to have some of the best programs. By that I mean the standard is 160 hours and some can be as long as 320 hours. Look for one on one instruction on the road and look for one on to meaning one instructor for two students in the yard. Generally, community colleges are more affordable than your nationwide CDL programs.

I went through Sage and got a government grant for my program. Sage is a great program and I believe it starts right out at $4900 but you have to provide your own lodging and that can get quite expensive depending on where you want to stay.

Commercial Drivers License (CDL) | Mid Michigan College This is the nearby program from the local CC. Seems it's 80 hours driving and 40 hours virtual instruction, which seems to fall a bit short of what you're suggesting. Should I look elsewhere?

I would look somewhere else because most companies require 160 hours of PTDI certified instructional time. Some of the instruction is going to be done on computer for ELDT part.

The one thing I loved about Sage was that on your road drives, it’s one on one instruction. Meaning there’s nobody else in the truck with you apart from the instructor. The yard on the other hand has you and another student in individual trucks taking turns on doing your maneuvers a.k.a. practicing for the test. You focus on your pre-trip, yard maneuvers, and your final session before you test out is spent honing your skill.

That's a total of 120 hours; that's not enough unless you settle for a mediocre job.

$5k for 120 hours is very expensive

the community college in my state is 320 hours , $1,700 and most people get the WOIA grant and attend for free .

Thank you everyone for your help and guidance. I've sadly learned I'm going to also run into problems with the 3-year work history requirement due to the regulation under FMSCA 391.21. It also seems the one year licensure rule is fairly standard across the industry and so I feel the best option is to find another job and wait out the year, which will make me a much stronger candidate to any future employers once I do obtain my CDL.

The 3 yr. work history just means "What were you doing the previous 3 years." Were you working W-2 or 1099 or for cash or hitchhiking around the country just looking around or taking care of a sick relative, in prison, etc. Just account for what you were doing the previous 3 years.
